Psalm 125:1-2
They that trust in the Lord shall be as mount Zion,
which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever.
As the mountains are round about Jerusalem,
so the Lord is round about his people from henceforth even for ever.

I hope it may be the happiest year of your life,
as I think each succeeding year of everybody’s life should be,
of only everybody were wise enough to see things as they are:
for it is certain that there really exists,
laid up and ready to hand,
for those who will just lay hands upon it,
enough for every one and enough for ever.
I am quite sure that the central mistake of all lives
that are mistaken is the not taking
this simple unchangeable fact for granted,
not seeing that it is so,
and cannot but be so,
and will remain so “though we believe not.”
I think I can trace every scrap of sorrow
in my own life to this simple unbelief.
How could I be anything but quite happy
if I believed always that all the past is forgiven,
and all the present furnished with power,
and all the future bright with hope,
because of the same abiding facts,
which don’t change with my mood,
do not crumble,
because I totter and stagger
at the promise through unbelief,
but stand firm and clear
with their peaks of pearl cleaving the air of Eternity,
and the bases of their hills rooted unfathomably
in the Rock of God?

The year begins,
and all its pages are as blank as
silent years of the life of Jesus Christ.
Let us begin it with high resolution;
then let us take all its limitations,
all its hindrances,
its disappointments,
its narrow and common-place conditions,
ans meet them as the Master did in Nazareth,
with patience,
with obedience,
putting ourselves in cheerful subjection,
serving our apprenticeship.
Who know what opportunity may come to us this year?
Let us live in a great spirit,
then we shall be ready for a great occasion.

Happy New Year!
Many make resolutions on the first day of a new year.
Not many find their resolve lasted all year long.

Paul gave us a good advice
on how to make this new year a good year.

Colossians 3:17
And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.

To “do all things in the name of Jesus” is the lesson of life;
do not be angry with yourselves,
nor despair of every learning it,
because thou art slow to learn the first few syllables.
When thou hast learned to do all things to Jesus,
it will shed pleasure over all the dull things,
softness over all the hard things,
peace over all trial and woe and suspense.
Then will life be glad, when thou livest to Jesus;
and how sweet death, to die in Jesus;
with Him, and to Him, and in Him,
to live for evermore.

Today’s thought – Keep Going

Good Morning

Hebrews 10:22
Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

During a long race,
it is easy to get discouraged.
But what most runners know is that being familiar
with the course helps to keep up momentum and motivation.
When you know what to expect,
you’re able to pace yourself and not become discouraged
when the road seems endless.

God doesn’t map out for us the exact course of our lives.
But there are some things we can know
without a shadow of a doubt.
We know troubles will come.
We know that God will never abandon us.
We know that He has good plans for us.
And we know that He will ultimately overcome evil in the world.
That knowledge and faith helps us persevere
when the going gets tough and the race gets long.

Hebrews 10:22
Let us all come forward and draw near with true (honest and sincere) hearts in unqualified assurance and absolute conviction engendered by faith (by that leaning of the entire human personality on God in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness), having our hearts sprinkled and purified from a guilty (evil) conscience and our bodies cleansed with pure water. Today’s thought – Just for Me?

Good Morning

2Corinthians 9:15
Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable gift.

Why did He do it?
A shack would have sufficed,
but He gave us a mansion.
Did He have to give
the birds a song
and the mountains a peak?
Was He required to put stripes on the zebra
and the hump on the camel? . . .
Why wrap creation in such splendor?
Why go to such trouble to give such gifts?

Why do you?
You do the same.
I’ve seen you searching for a gift.
I’ve seen you stalking the malls and walking the aisles.
I’m not talking about the obligatory gifts . . .
I’m talking about the extra-special gifts . . .
Why do you do it? . . .
You do it so the heart will stop.
You do it so the jaw will drop.
You do it to hear those words of disbelief?
“You did this for me?”

That’s why you do it.
And that is why God did it.
Next time a sunrise steals your breath
or a meadow of flowers leaves you speechless,
remain that way.
Say nothing and listen as heaven whispers,
“Do you like it? I did it just for you.”

Today’s thought – Emmanuel, God With Us

Matthew 1:23
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

A few years ago a striking Christmas card was published, with the title, “If Christ had not come.” It was founded upon your Saviour’s words, “If I had not come.” the represented a clergyman falling into a short sleep in his study on Christmas morning and dreaming of a world into which Jesus had never come.

In his dream he found himself looking through his home, but there were no little stockings in the chimney corner, no Christmas bells or wreaths of holly, and no Christ to comfort, gladden and save. He walked out on the public street, but there was no church with its spire pointing to Heaven. He came back and sat down in his library, but every book about the Saviour had disappeared.

A ring at the door-bell, and a messenger asked him to visit a poor dying mother. He hastened with the weeping child and as he reached the home he sat down and said, “I have something here that will comfort you.” He opened his Bible to look for a familiar promise, but it ended at Malachi, and there was no gospel and no promise of home and salvation, and he could only bow his head and weep with her in bitter despair.

Two days afterward he stood beside her coffin and conducted the funeral service, but there was no message of consolation, no word of a glorious resurrection, no open Heaven, but only “dust to dust, ashes to ashes,” and one long eternal farewell. He realized at length that “He had not come,” and burst into tears and bitter weeping in his sorrowful dream.

Suddenly he woke with a start, and a great shout of joy and praise burst from his lips as he heard his choir singing in his church close by:

‘O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant,
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
Come and behold Him, born the King of Angels
O come let us adore Him, Christ, the Lord.”

Let us be glad and rejoice today, because, “He has come.” And let us remember the annunciation of the angel, “Behold I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people, for unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. Luke 2:10-11

“He comes to make His blessing flow,
Far as the curse if found.”

Today’s thought – A Saviour, Christ the Lord

Good Morning

Luke 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Jesus Christ was born in the meanest of circumstances,
but the air above was filled
with the hallelujahs of the heavenly hosts.
His lodging was a cattle pen,
but a star drew distinguished visitants
from afar to do Him homage.
His birth was contrary to the laws of life.
His death was contrary to the laws of death.
No miracle is so inexplicable as His life and teaching.
He had no cornfields or fisheries,
but He could spread a table for 5,000
and have bread and fish to spare.
He walked on no beautiful carpets,
but He walked on the waters and they supported Him.
His crucifixion was the crime of crimes,
but, on God’s side, no lower price than His infinite agony
could have make possible our redemption.
When He died few men mourned,
but a black crepe was hing over the sun.
though men trembled not for their sins,
the earth shook under the load.
All nature honored him;
sinners alone rejected Him.
Sin never touched Him.
Corruption could not get hold of his body.
The soil that had been reddened
with His blood could not claim His dust.
Three years He preached His gospel.
He wrote not book,
built no church,
had no money back of Him.
After 1,900 years,
He is the one central character of human history,
the perpetual theme of all preaching,
the pivot around which the events of the age revolve,
the only Regenerator of the human race.
Was it merely the son of Joseph and Mary
who crossed the world’s horizon nearly 2,000 years ago?
Was it merely human blood that was spilled on Calvary’s hill
for the redemption of sinners and which has worked such wonders
in men and nations through the centuries?
What thinking man can keep from exclaiming:
“MY LORD AND MY GOD!”

Today’s thought – Joshua’s Instructions

Joshua 23:6-11
So be very courageous and steadfast to keep and do all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, turning not aside from it to the right hand or the left, That you may not mix with these nations that remain among you, or make mention of the names of their gods or swear by them or serve them or bow down to them. But cling to the Lord your God as you have done to this day. For the Lord has driven out from before you great and strong nations; and as for you, no man has been able to withstand you to this day. One man of you shall put to flight a thousand, for it is the Lord your God Who fights for you, as He promised you. Be very watchful of yourselves, therefore, to love the Lord your God. Amplified Bible

Everything depended on whether or not Israel would continue to be faithful to the covenant. Joshua’s words do not conceal his apprehension. Seven times he refers to the idolatrous nations still left in Canaan. He knew the snare they would be to Israel and he therefore prescribed three safeguards.

First, there must be brave adherence to God’s word (Joshua 23:6).

Second, there must be a vigilantly continued separation from the Canaanite nations (Joshua 23:7).

Finally, there must be a cleaving to the Lord with real and fervent love. (Joshua 23:8-11).

Today’s thought – The Power in Praying

Good Morning,

“The weapons we use in our fight are not the world’s weapons but God’s powerful weapons, which we use to destroy strongholds.” (2 Corinthians 10:4, Good New Bible).

We have an arsenal not made by human hands, but is stocked full with the powerful weapons fashioned by God Himself. They aren’t for marketing or manipulation of any sort, but are specifically designed to demolish demonic strongholds — putting down every false argument raised against Truth. These weapons have the power of God to destroy the enemy’s efforts against our Faith.
Prayer is one of these weapons, and when it is coupled with the Word of God it possesses a power that is invincible. That’s why the early disciples said, “We will devote ourselves to prayer, and to the ministry of the Word.” When we follow their example, we will experience the same results that happened for them.
Let’s look at a remarkable example found in the Scriptures.
When Joshua was battling the armies of the Amalekites in the valley of Rephidim, the Bible tells us that Moses was on the mountain lifting up the Rod which God had given him. As long as the Rod was held up, Joshua advanced in battle. When Moses’ arms grew weary and he lowered the Rod, the enemy began to make advances against Joshua. Aaron and Hur, two of Moses’ friends, stood beside him and held his arms up — the result was a overwhelming victory for Joshua. (see Exodus 17:8-13).
The eyes of the LORD search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him. Jesus said that when we pray in secret, God will reward us openly. An example of this happened in Jerusalem when the disciples gathered in prayer and “the place where they were assembled was shaken.” They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and preached the Word of God with boldness — even in the face of death threats.
This brief scan of the biblical record proves the age old adage — “The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much!” (James 5:16). Prayer makes tremendous power available, the kind of power that is dynamic in its working and effective in its results; great power that produces wonderful results.
Why not pray today and look for happens as a result. You just might find yourself praying every day! Rylie

Today’s thought – The Song of the Lord

“When the burnt offering began, the Song of the Lord began.”– 2Chronicles 29:27.
“They sing as it were a new Song before the Throne.” — Revelation 14:3.

HEZEKIAH, AT the age of twenty-five, came to the throne, and set himself to reverse his father’s evil policy. The doors of the Temple were re-opened, and under his direction the Levites were commissioned to cleanse the desecrated courts of the rubbish and filth that had been allowed to accumulate. After eight days of strenuous labour, they were able to report that their work was successfully accomplished; that the altar of burnt-offering and the table of shewbread were ready for the renewal of their wonted service. It was good news, and in the early morning of a memorable day, the king, accompanied by his princes and officers of state, took part in a solemn service of re-dedication. Amid the tense expectancy of the vast congregation which had assembled, Hezekiah commanded that the burnt sacrifice should be offered; and “when the burnt-offering began, the song of the Lord began also.”

These ancient sacrifices have passed for ever. “Sacrifice and offering Thou dost not desire; mine ears hast Thou pierced (nailing me to Thy Cross); burnt-offering and sin-offering hast Thou not required. Then said I, Lo, I come, I delight to do Thy will, O my God!” To yield up one’s life to the Saviour, to surrender our lives for others for His sake, to maintain the steadfast resolve of self-sacrifice,–this surely fulfils the conception of the burnt-offering, which the king ordered that morning as the symbol of national devotion to the Will of God. Can we wonder that the Song of the Lord began also? Does not that same Song arise in every heart when the sacrifice of love and obedience begins?

It is the self-contained life that has made itself snug within its four walls, sound-proof, sorrow-proof, as it thinks, and love-proof, which is song-less and pitiable.

Our Lord said: “‘Whosoever shall lose his life for My sake shall find it.” That finding is the correlative and source of the “Song of the Lord.'” Unite thyself with Jesus on the Cross, and one day thou wilt find thyself sharing with Him the New Song of accomplished Redemption!   ~~~Meyer

Today’s thought – Stilling Life’s Storms

Good Afternoon

“He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waters thereof are still. Then they are glad because they be quiet; so He bringeth them unto their desired haven.”– Psalm_107:29-30.

This Psalm contains five wonderful pictures of life.
First, we see the travellers
who have lost their way (Psalm 107:4-9);
next, prisoners and captives
who sit in darkness (Psalm 107:10-16);
we see a sick-room (Psalm 107:17-22);
next, a terrific storm at sea (Psalm 107:23-32);
and finally, the lovely picture of a desert land
being turned into a fertile landscape (Psalm 107:33-38).
The refrain, calling upon men to praise the Lord for His goodness,
is repeated four times,
and the Psalm closes with the fervent thought that all
who are wise will give heed to the various dealings of God,
as shown in these Acts of His loving-kindness.

In all lives there are periods of tumult and storm.
We are whirled about by angry billows, and it seems
as though we shall never reach the harbour of peace and rest.
Some give themselves up to such experiences as a fate
which they cannot avoid, or attempt to drown their fears
and dull their senses to suffering and danger.
But faith cleaves its way through the murky mists
and driving cloud-wrack, and establishes a sure connection
with the throne of the Eternal Father.
This is what the New Testament calls the anchorage of the soul,
and however severe the storm that sweeps over the earth,
the soul that shelters there is safe.
“Then they cried unto the Lord in their trouble,
and He delivered them out of their distresses.”

At this moment you may be passing through
a storm of outward trouble.
Wave after wave beats upon you,
as one calamity is followed by another,
until it seems as though the little barque
of your life must be overwhelmed.
Look up to God and cry to Him.
He sees you, and will not allow you to be engulfed.
Or you may be experiencing inward sorrow.
Your affections have been misplaced;
the one you love has deceived and failed you,
and the sky is now dark and stormy.
The one resort of the soul when it is hard driven,
is to look up to Him who holds the winds in His fist,
the waters in the hollow of His hand,
and who cannot forget or forsake those who cry to Him. Meyer

Today’s thought – Three Taverns

Good Morning

“Some of the followers in Rome heard about us and came to meet us at the Market of Appius and at the Three Taverns.When Paul saw them, he thanked God and was encouraged.”  Acts 28:15

This is a delightful moment captured forever in the words of Luke, author of The Acts. What makes this moment so special was that it came after a long and arduous struggle against one thing after another. Here’s a recap of what Paul and his fellow travelers had encountered.

First, a mob of religious fanatics rushed upon Paul intending to stone him to death in Jerusalem. Being both a Jew and a Roman citizen, Paul appealed to a Roman jailer who secured him in the local prison. From there he was sent first to Festus, who then passed him up the food chain to Agrippa; who then put him on a ship headed for Rome to appear before Caesar.

The ship, despite Paul’s warnings to the Captain, got caught in a horrific storm at sea; a storm of such force that all hope of their being saved was lost. Breaking apart upon a reef, they were able to make it to land, where Paul was bitten by a poisonous snake, but miraculously survived.

Finally they reach the shores of Italy and head towards Rome — the one City Paul had tried to visit so many times before, but was, in his words, “hindered by Satan” from doing so. And now he is on his way — as a prisoner in chains.

That’s when this scene unfolds. Believers in Rome had somehow heard that Paul was enroute, and traveled almost fifty miles out of the City to not only meet him on the way at a place called The Three Taverns, but to escort him into the City as if he were a visiting dignitary. When Paul saw them, he thanked God and was encouraged. One translation says, “his spirits rose.”

My friend, if the road you travel is beset with one blow after the other, and yet you are pressing on in faithfulness to the Lord — take heart. The Three Taverns are yet ahead, and a band of brothers will greet you there, lifting your spirits and filling your heart with praise! ~~Rylie
