May 3, Today’s thought – God Ruleth

Wind chimes

Good Morning

But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children; To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them. The Lord hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all. Psalm 103:17-19

Some time since, in the early spring, I was going out at my door when round the corner came a blast of east wind–defiant and pitiless, fierce and withering–sending a cloud of dust before it.

I was just taking the latchkey from the door as I said, half impatiently, “I wish the wind would“–I was going to say change; but the word was checked and the sentence was never finished.

As I went on my way, the incident became a parable to me. There came an angel holding out a key; and he said:

“My Master send thee His love, and bids me give you this.”

“What is it?” I asked, wondering. “The keys of the winds,” said the angel, and disappeared.

Now, indeed should I be happy. I hurried away up into the heights whence the winds came, and stood amongst the caves. “I will have done with the east wind at any rate–and that shall plague us no more,” I cried; and calling in that friendless wind, I closed the door, and heard the echoes ringing in the hollow places. I turned the triumphantly. “There,” I said, “now we have done with that.”

“What shall I choose in its place?” I asked myself, looking about me. “The south wind is pleasant’: and I thought of the lambs and the young life on every hand, and the flowers that begun to deck the hedgerows. But as I set the key within the door, it began to burn in my hand.

“What am I doing?” I cried, “who knows what mischief I may bring about? How do I know what the fields want! Ten thousand things of ill may come of this foolish wish of mine.”

Bewildered and ashamed, I looked up and prayed that the Lord would send His angel yet again to take the key; and for my part I promised that I would never want to have it any more.

But lo, the Lord Himself stood by me. He reached His hand to take the key; and as I laid it down, I saw that it rested against the sacred wound-print.

It hurt me indeed that I could ever have murmured against anything wrought by Him who bare such sacred tokens of His love. Then He took the key and hung it on His girdle.

“Dost THOU keep the key of the winds?” I asked.

“I do, my child,” He answered graciously.

And lo, I looked again and there hung all the keys of all mu life. He saw my look of amazement and asked, “Didst thou not know , my child, that my kingdom ruleth over all?”

“Over all, my Lord!” I answered; “then it is not safe for me to murmur at anything?” Then did He lay His hand upon me tenderly. “My child,” He said, “thy only safety is, in everything, to love and trust and praise.” ~~~Mark Guy Pearse

May 2, Today’s thought – Even to Delay

feb10 evning light 001An early spring evening light

Good Afternoon

So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he cast himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees, And said to his servant, Go up now, look toward the sea. And he went up, and looked, and said, There is nothing. And he said, Go again seven times. And it came to pass at the seventh time, that he said, Behold, there ariseth a little cloud out of the sea, like a man’s hand. And he said, Go up, say unto Ahab, Prepare thy chariot, and get thee down that the rain stop thee not. 1 Kings 18:42-44

Come up on top of Carmel.
and see that remarkable parable of Faith and Sight
It was not the descent of the fire that now was necessary,
but the descent of the flood;
and the man that can command the fire
can command the flood by the same means and methods.
We are told he bowed himself to the ground
with his face between his knees;
that is, shutting out all sights and sounds.
He was putting himself in a position where,
beneath his mantle,
he could neither see nor hear what was going forward.

He said to his servant,
“Go and take an observation.”
He went and came back,
and said–how sublimely brief!
one word–“Nothing.”

What do we do under such circumstances?

We say, “It is just as I expected!”
and we give up praying.
Did Elijah?
No, he said, “Go again.”
His servant again came back and said,
“Nothing!”
“Go again.”
‘Nothing!”

By and by he came back, and said,
“There is a little cloud like a man’s hand.”
A man’s hand had been raised in supplication,
and presently down came the rain;
and Ahab had not time to get back
to the gate of Samaria with all his fast steeds.
This is a parable of Faith and Sight–
faith shutting itself up with God;
sight taking observations
and seeing nothing;
faith going right on,
and “praying with prayer,”
with utterly hopeless reports from sight.

Do you know how to pray that way,
how to pray prevailingly?
Let sight give as discouraging reports as it may,
but pay no attention to thee.
The living God is still in the heavens
and even to delay is part of His goodness.

May 1, Today’s thought – There is a Tree

aug 11 005This is an oak, not a juniper.
It is large and strong and steadfast and alive..

Good Morning

Today is the Farmer’s birthday. He is 72.
We have been together 45 years.
Usually when I read this I think of lasting love.
Today I know it describes the Farmer,
his strength, his dependability
and, yes, his love.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. Psalm 1:3

“There is a tree. At the downhill edge of a long, narrow field in the western foothills of the La Sal Mountains — southeastern Utah. A particular tree. A juniper. Large for its species — maybe twenty feet tall and two feet in diameter. For perhaps three hundred years this tree has stood its ground. Flourishing in good seasons, and holding on in bad times. “Beautiful” is not a word that comes to mind when one first sees it. No naturalist would photograph it as exemplary of its kind. Twisted by wind, split and charred by lightning, scarred by brushfires, chewed on by insects, and pecked by birds. Human beings have stripped long strings of bark from its trunk, stapled barbed wire to it in using it as a corner post for a fence line, and nailed signs on it on three sides: NO HUNTING; NO TRESPASSING; PLEASE CLOSE THE GATE. In commandeering this tree as a corner stake for claims of rights and property, miners and ranchers have hacked signs and symbols in its bark, and left Day-Glo orange survey tape tied to its branches. Now it serves as one side of a gate between an alfalfa field and open range. No matter what, in drought, flood heat and cold, it has continued. There is rot and death in it near the ground. But at the greening tips of its upper branches and in its berrylike seed cones, there is yet the outreach of life.

I respect this old juniper tree. For its age, yes. And for its steadfastness in taking whatever is thrown at it. That it has been useful in a practical way beyond itself counts for much, as well. Most of all, I admire its capacity for self-healing beyond all accidents and assaults. There is a will in it — toward continuing to be, come what may.”

April 30, Today’s thought – Don’t Let Go!

April 14 flowers 005Ready to Bloom

Good Morning

Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are. James 5:17

Thank God for that!
He got under a juniper tree,
as you and I have often done;
he complained and murmured,
as we have often done;
was unbelieving,
as we have often been.
But that was not the case
when he really got into touch with God.
Though
“a man subject to like passions as we are,”
“he prayed praying.”
It is sublime in the original — not “earnestly,”
but “he prayed in prayer.”
He kept on praying.
What is the lesson here?
You must keep praying.
~~~Arthur T. Pierson
Each of three boys gave a definition of faith
which is an illustration of the tenacity of faith.
The first boy said, “It is taking hold of Christ”;
the second, “Keeping hold”;
and the third, “Not letting go.”
Keep holding on, just one more hour
May bring to thee the promised power;
O Keep holding on, thy Lord doth care-
He’ll not forget to answer prayer.
April 29, Today’s thought, Cultivate this Attitude
April 14-15 005This little viola has been growing and blooming
as a volunteer in this pot for at least four years.
I smile when I see it,
because it encourages me to keep trying to bloom
in the place where I am planted.
Good Morning
“Because they regard not the works of the LORD, nor the operation of his hands, he shall destroy them, and not build them up” Psalm 28:5.
The Bible asks, “What is man that Thou art mindful of him?”
The psalmist who penned the question found it too astounding
to grasp that so great a God would even notice,
let alone regard so lowly a creature as man.
Yet, even more astounding is this —
that so lowly a creature as man
would be of such a highminded opinion of himself
that he completely disregards so great a God as this!
The Hebrew verb for regard means
“to discern, to perceive, to observe, to pay attention to,
to be intelligent, to be discreet, to understand.”
It shows intentionality on the part of an individual w
ho is looking for what God is doing,
observing how He does it,
and seeking to understand what this may teach us about Him.
For those who will cultivate this attitude in their lives,
and explore their world with constant regard to the works of God,
and the operations of His hands,
a promise is made from heaven.
They will be built up.
This means God will construct their lives and keep them intact;
strengthened to withstand storms,
and blessed with bounty in life.
But the man who does not regard
the works of the Lord will be destroyed.
The Hebrew word here means
“to pull down, to break through, to overthrow, to destroy.”
This is the exact strategy of Satan against the soul of every man.
He seeks to pull down the defenses
which God has erected around your life,
and breakthrough into your inner world,
where he then may overthrow you — and destroy you.
“The thief comes to steal, kill, and destroy,” Jesus said.
When any person disregards God,
they thereby unwittingly prescribe their own destruction;
for they open themselves up
to the invasive and corrosive power of sin,
and all the ensuing sorrow it can muster.
May I encourage you my friend to make sure
that the Lord does not become the Disregarded God?
You are far too worthy,
and your life has so much to offer
than for you to permit Satan to bring you to great ruin
through the prideful act of disregarding the Lord.
~~~Rylie

April 25 Today’s thought – A Burning and Shining Light

April 14 flowers 0024th of July

Good Morning

“He was a burning and a shining light” John 5:35.

This lasting tribute was said of John the Baptist,
by none other than Jesus Himself.
Indeed, Jesus also said,

“I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he”  Matthew 11:11.

This means that each one of us may,
like John, be a burning and shining light.
But there is a price to be paid.
Years ago I heard the great revival preacher, Leonard Ravenhill,
say, “The cost of shining is burning.”
Many want the glow without the heat,
but there can be no sparkle where there are not sparks;
and there can be no sparks where the hammer of God’s word
does not strike the anvil of our souls.

The cost of shining is burning.
The disciples said,

“Did not our heart burn within us while He talked with us along the way, and while He opened to us the Scriptures?”  Luke 24:32.

In yet another place the Bible asks,

“Does not My word burn like fire?” says the LORD.

“Is it not like a mighty hammer that smashes a rock to pieces?”  Jeremiah 23:29.

As we open ourselves to the igniting power of God’s word,
all within us that is wood, hay or stubble
is consumed by its tireless flame.
And then, whatever yet remains
that is hardened and unresponsive deep in our hearts
is busted loose by the mighty blow of God’s hammer —
His living word unleashed in our yielded lives.

Will you let the truth of God’s unchanging Word
have its way in your life?
In your thoughts,
your hopes,
and your aspirations?
In your opinions,
your attitudes,
and your behavior?
In your family,
your friendships,
and your associations?

If you say yes,
you will become a burning and shining light;
and you will be counted great in the Kingdom of God.

April 24, Today’s thought – The Pattern

April 14 flowers 003Golden Celebration

Good Afternoon

From Joy & Strength , Mary Wilder Tileson

But we all, with open face, beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory. 2 Corinthians 3:18

Nothing short of the Life of the Eternal Son of God—the Holiness,
the Purity of God, is the standard at which we are to aim;
that is to be reproduced in our circumstances;
the Divine Perfections are to be translated,
reproduced in our life,
our home,
our trials,
our difficulties,
our age of the world.
Lest us ask ourselves,
What is the special likeness of Christ
that He would reproduce in me?
What are the features of His Life that He calls me to imitate?
What pattern would He set before me in my work,
my circumstances,
my difficulties?
What are the inspirations of grace that He would urge me
to cultivate and cherish?

April 23 Today’s thought – Preparation

April 22 - planting 007

First tomatoes in the ground yesterday

Good Morning

And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush. When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him, Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold. Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground. I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt. Acts 7:30-34

That was a long wait in preparation for a great mission.
When God delays,
He is not inactive.
He is getting ready His instruments,
He is ripening our powers;
and at the appointed moment
we shall arise equal to our task.
Even Jesus of Nazareth was thirty years in privacy,
growing in wisdom before He began His work.

April 22, Today’s thought – A God-Dappled Day

April 14-15 004Violas

Good Morning

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.
(one version …to give you a future and a hope.)
Jeremiah 29:11

If we train yourselves,
we can sense God’s presence in every object or person
we encounter during even a humdrum day;
and recognizing the sparkle in the bubble
is a way to worship the God who created bubbles
and added sparkles for the fun of it.

An ideally God-dappled day would begin,
as do other days,
when the alarm clock unseats us from our dreams.
Instead of groaning,
sighing,
lugging my creaking carcass from the cozy blankets,
a more disciplined Christian
might take the opportunity to thank God for a sense of hearing . . .
letting my body tingle with the news that
I woke up.
I have been granted another day.

Just like training for any sport,
learning to feel beyond the physical takes discipline.
I try to take inventory at the end of the day,
asking God to penetrate my world,
to make the ordinary gleam.
With practice and conscious effort,
we can all find God in the most surprising places;
in patterns of tree bark,
in sunsets reflected off skyscrapers,
in the steam of hot amaretto coffee.

April 19, Today’s thought – Dealing with Debt

April 14-15 003 African Daisy

Good Morning

Doesn’t someone owe you an apology?
A second chance?
An explanation?
A thank you?
A childhood?
A marriage?
Your parents should have been more protective.
Your children should have been more appreciative.
Your spouse should be more sensitive.
What are you going to do?
Few questions are more important.

Dealing with debt is at the heart of your happiness.
Jesus speaks of the grace we should share.

He says: “For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.” (Matthew 6:14).

It reminds me of the story of a huge grizzly bear
in the center of Yellowstone Park
feeding on discarded camp food.
No one dared draw near.
Except a skunk who walked toward the food
and took his place next to the grizzly.
The bear didn’t object.
He knew the high cost of getting even!
We’d be wise to learn the same thing.

April 18, Today’s thought – Wait for Hope

April 14-15 002Brother Bob’s California poppies have tripled in size this year.

Good Morning

We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed;
2Corinthians 4:8-9

George Matheson, the great Scottish preacher,
who when he was told by a famous oculist that he was going blind,
wrote these lovely words:
“O love that will not let me go!–I rest my weary soul on thee.”
Also,
“O joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to Thee:
I trace the rainbow through the rain”;
— listen to these lines from his pen:

“There are times when things lii very dark to me–so dark that I have to wait even for hope. A long-deferred fulfillment carries its own pain, but to wait for hope, to see no glimmer of a prospect and yet refuse to despair; to have nothing but night before the casement and yet to keep the casement open for possible stars; to have a vacant place in my heart and yet to allow that place to filled by no inferior presence–that is the grandest patience in the universe, It is Job in the tempest; it is Abraham on the road to Moriah; it is Moses in the desert of Midian; it is the Son of man in the Garden of Gethsemane.”

It takes a real faith to trace the rainbow through the rain,
but it takes the storm cloud to make the rainbow,
and George Matheson learned to have a childlike trust,
and his testimony has blessed millions throughout this generation.

April 17, Today’s thought – “IF” by Rudyard Kipling

April 14 flowers 008The Roses are starting to bloom at Cozy Acres

Good Morning

“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold In settings of silver. ”
Proverbs 25:11

Here is a real treasure;
one of Kipling’s best offers to the world of Literature;
his insightful poem, simply entitled “IF” —

If you can keep your head when all about you
are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
but make allowance for their doubting, too;
If you can wait and not be tired of waiting;
or being lied about don’t deal in lies;
or being hated don’t give way to hating;
and yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise.

If you can dream, and not make dreams your master.
If you can think, and not make thoughts your aim.
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster,
and treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
or watch the things you gave your life to, broken;
and stoop to build them up with worn-out tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings,
and risk it on one turn of pitch and toss,
and lose, and start again at your beginning
and never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
to serve your turn long after they are gone,
and so hold on when there is nothing in you
except the will which says to them: “Hold on!”

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
or walk with kings – nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
with sixty seconds’ worth of distance run;
Yours is the earth and everything that’s in it,
and (which is more) you’ll be a man, My son!

Cast all your “IF’s” on the Lord . . .Today

April 16, Today’s thought – Peace I Leave with You

April 14 flowers 011

Peace I leave with you,
my peace I give unto you:
not as the world giveth,
give I unto you.
Let not your heart be troubled,
neither let it be afraid.

John 14:27

from Clarke’s Concordance:

Peace I leave with you
The Jewish form of salutation and benediction.
A wish of peace among them is thus to be understood:
May you prosper in body and soul,
and enjoy every earthly and heavenly good!
My peace I give unto you
Such tranquility of soul,
such uninterrupted happiness of mind,
such everlasting friendship with God as I enjoy,
may ye all enjoy!
And such blessedness I bequeath unto you:
it is my last, my best, my dying legacy.
Not as the world giveth
Not as the Jews, in empty wishes:
not as the people of the world,
in empty compliments.
Their salutations and benedictions
are generally matters of custom and polite ceremony,
given without desire or design;
but I mean what I say;
what I wish you,
that I will give you.
To his followers Jesus gives peace,
procures it,
preserves it,
and establishes it.
He is the author, prince, promoter, and keeper of peace.
Neither let it be afraid
Let not your heart shrink back
through fear of any approaching evil.
This is the proper meaning of the word.
In a few hours ye will be most powerfully assaulted;
but stand firm: – the evil will only fall upon me;
and this evil will result in your comfort and salvation,
and in the redemption of a lost world.

Accept the promise of peace . .Today
With my prayers,desiring yours, Leslie

Keep Faith Fresh — Have Faith in God.

Good Morning

I was looking back through this blog for a post
and bumped into this one.
I am thankful to say,
the reconciliation continues,
my daughter and I are closer than we have ever been.
I am also thankful that God hasn’t changed either,
His word is still true.
I am still learning to lean on Him.

Mark 11:22  And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.

Several years ago in October our middle daughter of five children, at 18 years and 3 months old, decided to leave home. We had some issues, but  hadn’t had discussions because I didn’t know how to talk with my children. (I was raised, as most in my generation,  that  children were not explained to and or encouraged to express their opinions, we were expected to be quiet and obedient, and I was. )  She had finished high school, didn’t have a job, and her only transportation was a bike. She left to live with an old neighbor who had listened to her.

She told us she was leaving, still with little words, she didn’t expect us to listen.  I don’t know how she felt.

I felt like everything I had taught her was being rejected, all the good, all the morals, all the teachings of Christ. At this time I didn’t feel personally rejected, that would come later.  I felt betrayed by the neighbor. I felt crushed and empty. I couldn’t even stay the day she moved her things out, I couldn’t watch her go.

Day after day I cried.  I questioned. I felt so empty, such a huge gaping hole in our home, …in my heart. I tried to look for solace and comfort from my husband but he was hurting, too. I couldn’t talk to family, I felt like a failure and was so ashamed of the failing.  I went to church, I prayed but as some have said, heaven seemed like brass,

Then one night, listening to the song, Yesterday, sung by a gospel group (I don’t even know which one) the Lord spoke to me: you aren’t in control, you can’t make things stay the same or change any thing, other people will change and there is only One who will never, never change.

It was there I found comfort. It was then I could picture those huge hands that hold the world, empty of the world, but waiting for me to place my daughter  into those Hands. She looked so very small. She looked so safe.

Yesterday by George Younce
(Chorus)
Yesterday things were different,
Today they’re different again
Jesus will never change,
Jesus is always the same

1. The sparrow will find a new dwelling,
The eagle will change its nest
But I’m holding on the changeless One,
And I’m leaning on His breast

2. The river will change,
change its course,
The mountains may crumble and fall
Time will leave its mark,
they say Upon us one and all

The line ‘Jesus will never, never change’
carried me and I was safe.

Malachi 3:6  For I am the LORD, I change not;

About four (5) years ago,
my daughter and I started down the road of reconciliation,
it has not been without its  pot holes.
I trying to learn to talk,
she is trying to temper her words.

My begining scripture, Have faith in God,
isn’t just a nice saying on a plaque
or to be cross stitched on a pillow.
It is a rock,
a firm foundation,
a shelter from the changes,
a healing for the brokenhearted….

Have Faith in God. . .Today
With my prayers, desiring yours, Leslie

April 13, Today’s thought – Rise Above Worry

10-28-09 015from Memory Lane in Sydney

Good Morning

Rise Above Worry

‘God…is the…controller of all things.’ 1 Timothy 6:15
We all worry from time to time, but wise people have learned to:
1. Define the situation clearly.
What exactly is it you’re worrying about?
Be specific.
Often when we take time to clarify the problem,
a way to solve it will present itself.
2. Face the worst that can happen.
Would you lose your job? Your relationship? Your investment?
In most cases, even if the worst did happen,
chances are it wouldn’t ruin you.
It may be inconvenient or painful,
but does it really warrant all the anxiety you’re giving it?
3. Resolve to accept the outcome whatever it is.
Most of the stress of worry comes from denial,
from not being willing to face the worst that could happen.
Once you make up your mind to accept whatever happens,
you’ll find worry looses its power over you.
4. Work to improve the situation.
Renowned neurologist James H. Austin said,
“Chance favours those in motion”
Do all you can to ensure the best possible outcome,
and “after you gave done everything…stand” Ephesians 6:13.
Stand on God’s promises!
5. Give the problem to God.
He’s “the…controller of all things.”
The Psalmist said,
“Those who know your name will trust in you,
for you, Lord,
have never forsaken those who seek you” Psalm 9:10.
Remember, nothing can happen to you today,
or any other day that God is not aware of,
in control of,
and able to bring you through.
