August 5, Today’s thought – Chose to See

P1000026Lift off at Reno Hot Air Balloon Show, 2007

Good Morning

On the wall of a concentration camp, are carved these words:

I believe in the sun, even though it doesn’t shine.
I believe in love, even when it isn’t shown.
I believe in God, even when He doesn’t speak.

I try to envision a skeletal hand gripping broken glass or stone to cut into that wall; eyes squinting through the darkness as he carved each letter. Whose hand cut such a conviction? Whose eyes saw good in such horror? There’s only one answer: eyes that chose to see the unseen.

Paul wrote in 2 Corinthians 4:18, “We set our eyes not on what we see but on what we cannot see. What we see will last only a short time, but what we cannot see will last forever.”

When tragedy strikes, we too, are left to choose what we see: the hurt or the Healer. The choice is ours!

August 1, Today’s Thought – Rendering Still

July 31 001Please let me interrupt this bath time to take a picture, thank you.

Good Morning,

Matthew 22:21
They say unto him, Caesar’s. Then saith he unto them,
Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s;
and unto God the things that are God’s.

Thoughts lingering from yesterday:
How am I supposed to render the things that are God’s to God?
What manifestation of God’s fruit of the spirit pleases God?

And the King shall answer and say unto them,
Verily I say unto you,
Inasmuch as ye have done it
unto one of the least of these my brethren,
ye have done it unto me.
Mathew 25:40

Romans 13:7-8,10

Render to all men their dues.[Pay] taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, and honor to whom honor is due.
Keep out of debt and owe no man anything, except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor [who practices loving others] has fulfilled the Law [relating to one’s fellowmen, meeting all its requirements].
Love does no wrong to one’s neighbor [it never hurts anybody]. Therefore love meets all the requirements and is the fulfilling of the Law. Amplified Bible

Galatians 6:9-10

And let us not lose heart and grow weary and faint in acting nobly and doing right, for in due time and at the appointed season we shall reap, if we do not loosen and relax our courage and faint.
So then, as occasion and opportunity open up to us, let us do good [morally] to all people [not only being useful or profitable to them, but also doing what is for their spiritual good and advantage].
Be mindful to be a blessing, especially to those of the household of faith [those who belong to God’s family with you, the believers]. Amplified Bible

2 Corinthians 9:6-7

[Remember] this: he who sows sparingly and grudgingly will also reap sparingly and grudgingly, and he who sows generously [that blessings may come to someone] will also reap generously and with blessings.
Let each one [give] as he has made up his own mind and purposed in his heart, not reluctantly or sorrowfully or under compulsion, for God loves (He takes pleasure in, prizes above other things, and is unwilling to abandon or to do without) a cheerful(joyous, “prompt to do it”) giver [whose heart is in his giving]. Amplified Bible

July 31, Today’s Thought-Render Unto God

july2212 duplication 002My heart yearns to walk in His paths,
according to His way marks.

Good Morning

Matthew 22:15-22

Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel
how they might entangle him in his talk.
And they sent out unto him their
disciples with the Herodians, saying,
Master, we know that thou art true,
and teachest the way of God in truth,
neither carest thou for any man:
for thou regardest not the person of men.
Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou?
Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?
But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said,
Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites?
Shew me the tribute money.
And they brought unto him a penny.
And he saith unto them,
Whose is this image and superscription?
They say unto him, Caesar’s.
Then saith he unto them,
Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s;
and unto God the things that are God’s.
When they had heard these words, they marvelled,
and left him, and went their way.

Render unto God the things that are God’s

What things of God do I possess?
The heart, soul, mind, and strength
Praise and thanksgiving
Time and Talents

Render – verb

Proverbs 3:27
Withhold not good from them to whom it is due,
when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.

Or am I withholding a part?

July 30, Today’s thought – An Effectual Prayer

482012 004Wilkes and Molly

Good Afternoon.

A true story of effectual prayer from the book Touching Incidents, and Remarkable Answers to Prayer complied by S.B. Shaw, 1893.

“No,” said the lawyer, “I shan’t press your claim against that man, you can get some one else to take your case, or you can withdraw it, just as you please.”

“Think there isn’t any money in it!”

“There would probably be some money in it, but it would, as you know, come from the sale of the little house the man occupies and calls home; but I don’t want to meddle with the matter, anyhow.”

“Got frightened out of it, eh?”

“No, I wasn’t frightened out of it.”

“I suppose likely the old fellow begged hard to be let off?”

“Well, yes, he did.”

“And you caved, likely?”

“No, I didn’t speak a word to him.”

“Oh, he did all the talking, did he?”

“Yes.”

“And you never said a word?”

“Not a word.”

“What in creation did you do?”

“I believe I shed a few tears.”

“And the old fellow begged you hard, you say?”

“No, I didn’t say so; he didn’t speak a word to me.”

“Well, may I respectfully inquire whom he did address in your hearing?”

“God Almighty.”

“Ah, he took to praying, did he?”

“Not for my benefit in the least. You see”–and the lawyer crossed his right foot over his left knee, and stroking his lower leg up and down, as if to state his case concisely; “you see, I found the little house easily and knocked at the outer door, which stood ajar; but nobody heard me, so I slipped into the hall, and saw, through the crack of another door, just as cozy a sitting-room as ever was. There on a bed, with her silver head on the pillows, as an old lady, who looked for all the world just as my mother did the last time I ever saw her on earth. Well, I was right on the point of knocking, when she said as clearly as could be: ‘Come, father, begin; I’m ready.’ down on his knees by her side went an old, white-haired man, still older than his wife, I should judge; and I could not have knocked then for the life of me. Well, he began; first he reminded God they were still His submissive children, mother and he; and no matter what He saw fit to bring them they shouldn’t rebel as His will! Of course, ’twas going to be terrible hard for them to go out homeless in old age, especially with poor mother so sick and helpless; but still they’d seen sadder things than ever that would be. He reminded God, in the next place, how different all might have been if only one of their boys might have been spared them; then his voice kind of broke, and a thin, white hand stole from under the coverlet, and moved softly over his snowy hair; then he went on to repeat, that nothing was so sharp as the parting with those three sons–unless mother and he would be separated. But at last he fell to comforting himself with the fact that the dear Lord knew through no fault of his own, that mother and he were threatened with the loss of their dear little home, which meant beggary and the alms-house; a place they prayed to be delivered from entering, if it could be consistent with God’s will. And then he fell to quoting a multitude of promises concerning the safety of those who put their trust in the Lord; yes, I should say he begged hard; in fact it was the most thrilling plea to which I ever listened. And at last, he prayed for God’s blessing on those who were about to demand justice” –the lawyer stroked his lower limb in silence for a moment or two, then continued more slowly than before; “And, I believe, I’d rather go to the poor-house myself, tonight, than to stain my heart and hands with the blood of such a prosecution as that.”

“Little afraid to defeat the old man’s prayer eh?” queried the client.

“Bless your soul, man, you could not defeat it!” roared the lawyer. “It doesn’t admit of defeat! I tell you, he left it all subject to the will of God; but he left no doubt as to his wishes in the matter; claimed that we were told to make known our desires unto God; but of all the pleading I ever heard that beat all. You see, I was taught that kind of thing myself in my childhood; and why I was sent to hear that prayer I’m sure I don’t know, but I hand the case over.”

“I wish,” said the client, twisting uneasily, “you hadn’t told be about the old fellow’s prayer.”

“Why so?”

“Well, I greatly want the money the place would bring, but was taught the Bible all straight when I was a youngster; and I’d hate to run counter to such a harangue as that you tell about. I wish you hadn’t heard a word of it; and another time I wouldn’t listen to petitions not intended for your ears.”

The lawyer smiled.

“My dear fellow,” he said, “you’re wrong again; it was intended for my ears and yours, too, and God Almighty intended it. My old mother used to sing about God’s moving in a mysterious way, I remember.”

“Well, my mother used to sing it too, ” said the claimant as he twisted his claim papers in his finger.
“You can call in, in the morning, if you like, and tell mother and him the claim has been met.”

“In a mysterious way,” added the lawyer, smiling.

James 5:13-16
Is any among you afflicted? let him pray.
Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
Is any sick among you?
let him call for the elders of the church;
and let them pray over him,
anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
And the prayer of faith shall save the sick,
and the Lord shall raise him up;
and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.
Confess your faults one to another,
and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.
The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

July 25, Today’s thought – Not Just Contemplating

482012 007Wilkes by Tom Clark

Good Morning

Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him. As he spake these words, many believed on him. John 8:28-30

The Christian compulsion is threefold:
A sense of direction–to “do always those things that please him”. Nothing can transcend the examples and practice of our Lord Jesus Christ. Among all treatises on personal relationship and conduct, there can be found no more reliable guide in matters of faith and conduct than that afforded in this simple and vital summary–that is, that we occupy ourselves with doing (not just contemplating) the things pleasing to Christ, “always”.
A sense of mission.Christ, ever our example, recognized and accepted His Divine Mandate, With Him the task was not a self-appointed one, but rather He was conscious of Divine Compulsion. “He sent me.” So it must be with all who bear His name.
A sense of companionship. Christ reiterates this fact of the Divine Presence. “He hath not left me alone.” Supremely important in this reassurance. ~~~Selected

July 24, Today’s thought – Amazing Grace

482012 005Molly by Tom Clark,
One of my favorites

Good Morning

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9

Amazing Grace

John Newton (1725-1807)
Stanza 6 anon.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

T’was Grace that taught my heart to fear.
And Grace, my fears relieved.
How precious did that Grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come;
‘Tis Grace that brought me safe thus far
and Grace will lead me home.

The Lord has promised good to me.
His word my hope secures.
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.

Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.

When we’ve been here ten thousand years
Bright shining as the sun.
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’ve first begun.

Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

Amazing Grace. . .Today

July 23, Today’s thought – Since That Time

July 19 butterfly and signs 007These signs lead veggie lovers to our vegetable stand on Saturdays.

Good Morning

For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. 2Chronicles 16:9

God is always looking for a man, or woman, whose heart with be always set on Him, and who will trust Him for all He desires to do. God is eager to work more mightily now than He ever has through any soul. The clock of the centuries points to the eleventh hour. ~~~~C.H.P.

In an address given to ministers and workers after his ninetieth birthday, George Mueller spoke thus of himself: “I was converted in November, 1825, but I only came into the full surrender of the heart, four years later, in July, 1829.
The love of money was gone,
the love of place was gone,
the love of position was gone,
the love of worldly pleasures and engagements was gone.
God, God alone became my portion.
I found my all in Him; I wanted nothing else. And by the grace of God this has remained, and has made me a happy man, an exceedingly happy man, and it led me to care only about the things of God. I ask affectionately, my beloved brethren, have you fully surrendered the heart to God or is there this thing or that thing with which you are taken up irrespective of God? I read a little of the Scriptures before, but preferred other books; but since that time the revelation He has made of Himself has become unspeakably blessed to me, and I can say from my heart, God is an infinitely lovely Being. Oh, be not satisfied until in your own inmost soul you can say, God is an infinitely lovely Being!”

July 22, Today’s thought – My Utmost for God

July 19 butterfly and signs 006Even Griss was interested in the butterfly.

Good Morning

Philippians 1:20-21 . . . my earnest expectation and my hope, that in nothing I shall be ashamed, but that with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

My Utmost for His Highest. “. . .my earnest expectation and hope that in nothing I shall be ashamed . . ” We will all feel very much ashamed if we do not yield to Jesus the areas of our lives He has asked us to yield to Him. It’s as if Paul were saying, “My determined purpose is to be my utmost for His highest–my best for His glory.” To reach that level of determination is a matter of the will, not of debate or of reasoning. It is absolute and irrevocable surrender of the will at that point. An undue amount of thought and consideration for ourselves is what keeps us from making that decision, although we cover it up with the pretense that it is others we are considering. When we think seriously about what it will cost others if we obey the call of Jesus, we tell God He doesn’t know what our obedience will mean. Keep to the point–He does know. Shut out every other thought and keep yourself before God in this one thing only–my utmost for His highest. I an determined to be absolutely and entirely for Him and Him alone.

My Unstoppable Determination for His Holiness.
“Whether it means life or death–it makes no difference!” (see 1:21). Paul was determined that nothing would stop him for doing exactly what God wanted. But before we choose to follow God’s will, a crisis must develop in our lives. This happens because we tend to be unresponsive to God’s gentler nudges. He brings us to the place where He asks us to be our utmost for Him and we begin to debate. He then providentially produces a crisis where we have to decide–for or against. That moment becomes a great crossroads in our lives. If a crisis has come to you on any front, surrender your will to Jesus absolutely and irrevocable.
~~My Utmost for His Highest, Oswald Chambers

Utmost – greatest possible degree, extent, intensity—unconditional, undiminished, unlimited, unmitigated, unqualified, unreserved.

Absolutely and Irrevocably . . .Today

July 19, Today’s thought – Step by Step

July 12 005Flower of the Okra

Good Morning

As thou goest step by step, the way shall open up before thee.
Proverbs 4:12 Hebrew Version

The love of God quite as often withholds the view
of the entire distance of the winding path through life.
He reveals it to us step by step and from corner to corner.
Hence it is necessary to trust Him to lead,
for He can see around the bend in the road.
He knows what lies ahead,
and whether we can cope with the situation now or later.
He consults our wants,
not our wishes, like wise and loving Father.
His corners are not the end of the way.
Corners discipline faith,
teach us patience to walk step by step,
and fit us for blessing.
Because our vision is limited,
it causes us to continually seek His guidance.

Proverbs 4:10-13
Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many. I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths. When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.

July 18, Today’s thought – Forever Gone

July 12 006Too much shade is what you get when
you plant too many sunflowers in the squash patch,
but it looks pretty.

Good Morning

I Looked

I looked upon a farm one day,
That once I used to own;
The barn had fallen to the ground,
The fields were overgrown.

This house in which my children grew,
Where we had lived for years–
I turned to see it broken down,
And brushed aside the tears.

I looked upon my soul one day,
To find it too had grown
With thorns and nettles everywhere,
The seeds neglect had sown.

The years had passed while I had cared
For thinks of lesser worth:
The things of Heaven I let go
While minding things of Earth.

To Christ I turned with bitter tears,
And cried, “O Lord, forgive!
O haven’t much time left for Thee,
Not many years to live.”

The wasted years forever gone,
The days I can’t recall:
If I could live those days again,
I’d make Him Lord of all.
~~Theodore W. Brennan

I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down. Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction. Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth; and thy want as an armed man. Proverbs 24:30-34

July 17, Today’s thought – Steadfast and Sure

P1030442Can you find the squirrel? Taken fall, 2011

Good Morning

Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) Hebrews 10:23

God’s children often find themselves in positions of profound difficulty. He leads then into tight corners. From here there seems to be no way of escape. No human judgement would have permitted such predicaments had they been previously consulted.
What are the attitudes of His children when they are placed in circumstances such as these? There is but one! A steadfast and sure trust in God! Refusing to look at circumstances. Look above them. Both light and darkness are alike to the One who dwells in them. Our loving Heavenly Father seeks the highest good for each of His own.We are in the school of faith, and there are lessons to be learned. Even God’s severe dealings are dealings in live. He “scourgeth every son whom He receiveth!” (Hebrews 12:6)
Where can one ind faith?
In some hour of desperate need it will be born within just when we are “at the end of the rope.” a precious experience given to a child of God is knowing no helper but God himself. “When He hath tried us we shall come forth as gold.” (Job 23:10)

July 15, Today’s thought – While Waiting on the Porch

house-122The Porch

Good Morning

And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. Luke 15:20

I have been waiting on the porch, for such a long time.
What have I been doing while I’ve waited?
I have been very busy.

1. I checked the driveway, yes, free from poison oak and stinging nettles
2. I checked the porch foundation, yes, secure and constant.
3. I swept down cobwebs of discouragement, regret and disappointment.
4. I washed the window to keep a clear vision.
5. I kept the steps de-iced with warmth, forgiveness and compassion.
6. I sat on the porch chair and prayed.
7. I washed the steps with tears.
8. I was watchful, even when busy, glancing out the window.
9. I paused often, listening for a knock.
10. As I looked down the road, I looked up.

The best part of waiting on the porch was opening the door and saying,

“Come in! I’m glad you’re home!”

reprint from July 17, 2009

It was worth the wait.

July 12- Today’s thought -The Jesus Storybook Bible

IMG_1773My Mother and brothers are on my mind today.
(from left to right)Patrick, Casey, Joe and Clifford

Good Morning

God is my Shepherd
And I am his little lamb.

He feeds me
He guides me
He looks after me.
I have everything I need.

Inside, my heart is very quiet.
As quiet as lying still in soft green grass
In a meadow
By a little stream.

Even when I walk through
the dark, scary, lonely place
I won’t be afraid
Because my Shepherd knows where I am.

He is here with me
He keeps me safe
He rescues me

He makes me strong
And brave.

He is getting wonderful things ready for me
Especially for me
Everything I ever dreamed of!

He fills my heart so full of happiness
I can’t hold it all inside.

Wherever I go I know

God’s Never Stopping

Never Giving Up

Unbreaking

Always and Forever

Love

Will go, too!~

July 10, Today’s thought – Overflowing Cup

July 8, dipper gourd 002Dipper gourd blossom

Good Morning

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies:
thou anointest my head with oil;
my cup runneth over.
Psalm 23:5

God gives hope! So what if someone was born thinner or stronger? Why count diplomas or compare resumes? What does it matter if they have a place at the head table? You have a place at God’s table—and He’s filling your cup to overflowing!

The overflowing cup was a powerful symbol in the days of David. As long as the host kept the cup full, the guest knew he was welcome. When the cup sat empty, the host was hinting that the hour was late. On those occasions when the host really enjoyed the company of the person, he filled the cup to overflowing; he kept pouring until the liquid ran over the edge of the cup and down on the table.

Have you noticed how wet your table is? God wants you to stay. Your cup overflows with joy. Overflows with grace. Shouldn’t your heart overflow with gratitude?

from Traveling Light, Max Lucado

Give, and it shall be given unto you;
good measure,
pressed down,
and shaken together,
and running over,
shall men give into your bosom.
For with the same measure that ye mete
withal it shall be measured to you again. Luke 6:38

Being thankful . . . Today

July 9, Today’s thought -Close, But Far Away

June 4 048A view of Cozy Acres not often posted, the Farmer’s work area.

Good Morning

Luke 15:13-20
And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.
And when he had spent all, there arose a mighty famine in that land; and he began to be in want.
And he went and joined himself to a citizen of that country; and he sent him into his fields to feed swine.
And he would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine did eat: and no man gave unto him.
And when he came to himself, he said, How many hired servants of my father’s have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!
I will arise and go to my father, and will say unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and before thee,
And am no more worthy to be called thy son: make me as one of thy hired servants.
And he arose, and came to his father. But when he was yet a great way off, his father saw him, and had compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

Rylie continues thinking about the elder brother.

“The older brother stalked off in an angry sulk and refused to join in. His father came out and tried to talk to him, but he wouldn’t listen.” (Luke 15:28, The Message)

We know not exactly how long the Prodigal had been gone from his father’s house, but it was not a brief period. At least a few years had passed. And during all this time the father never stopped watching and waiting, yearning for the return of his beloved son.

George Morrison writes, “And always beside him was his elder son, with his heart utterly hardened to the prodigal—father and son a million miles apart. He was at home, under the same roof, and in his father’s presence every day; while his brother, the prodigal, was in an alien land. Yet the elder brother was farther away from the father than his ne’er-do-well brother.” (Devotional Sermons).

And in the same manner that the father ran out to meet his returning son, so he goes out to the elder son and tries to talk him into the party. But the elder brother would have none of it. Rather his bitterness spewed out the brooding anger that long had been in his heart.

It is a frightful thing when we allow a religious spirit to rise above our relationship with God and one another. The elder brother was diligent and obedient — but hard. He was a pattern of industry and duty, putting in long hours in the fields and making sure the father’s estate was prosperous. But there was something dreadfully wrong under the surface.
Not only did he have no affection whatsoever for his younger brother, which is seen in his spiteful words to his father — “when this son of yours comes home” — but, more to the point, his heart was bitter toward his father. “For years I have worked for you like a slave and have always obeyed you. But you have never even given me a little goat, so that I could give a dinner for my friends!”

“When anyone breaks out like that, it is not so extemporaneous as it seems. It is the boiling over, in some heated moment, of what has long been simmering in the heart.” (Morrison)

He was so close to the Father, and yet so far away.

Am I close or far away . . .Today?
With my prayers, desiring yours, Leslie
