Be Still

be
I do not believe that we have begun to understand
the marvelous power there is in stillness.
We are in such a hurry–we must be doing–
so that we are in danger of not giving God a chance to work.
You may depend upon it,
God never says to us,
“Stand still,” or
“Sit still,” or
“Be still,”
unless He is going to do something.
This is our trouble in regard to our Christian life;
we want to do something to be Christians
when we need to let Him work in us.

Do you know how still you have to be
when your likeness is being taken?
Now God has one eternal purpose concerning us,
and that is that we should be like His Son;
and in order that this may be so, we must be passive.
We hear so much about activity,
may be we need to know what it is to be quiet.
–Crumbs

Let be and be still, and know (recognize and understand) that I am God.

Little by Little

Sometimes when we think about our habits,
the things we would like to see changed
fills our to-do list
and discouragement steps in
before we even know where to start

This is my true story.

God began leading me to make changes
in my housekeeping habits.
My critical eye was so harsh
and my mountain of changes so high.
I cried out to God
“I don’t know where to begin!”
In His kindness He led me little by little.
God asked me “Do you get up every morning?”
(He really spoke to me just like this in these words.)
I said, “Yes.”
He said, Today after you get up and dressed,
make your bed,

unmade-bed

pick up any laundry,
shut any dresser drawers,
and close the closet doors.”
So that is what I did.
As I left the room with laundry in my arms,
I turned to look back at my room.
I was amazed at how neat and tidy
and clean it looked.
Even though no actual dusting, vaccuming,
or putting away the accumulated piles was done.

AND that was ALL I was asked to do,
God didn’t add anything more to my list
of have-to-do-to-make-a-change.
For three or four days,
that was the BIG change in my housekeeping routine.

Of course, then God said,
“Today we are going to do the dishes.”

dirty_dishes_in_a_kitchen_sink_royalty_free_clipart_picture_100223-032403-324042

I said, “I can’t do the dishes”

You see,
I would wash one sink full of dishes,
rinse them,
put them in the drainer,
put another group of dirty dishes
in the sink to soak and walk off.
I’d finish later. yeah!

So I knew God meant to wash ALL the dishes,
dry All the dishes, even the pans,
put away ALL the dishes,
wipe out the sinks,
put away the dish drainer
and wipe off all the counters.
I knew I couldn’t do it.
I hadn’t done that in so long.
but I knew how God had helped me
with my bed and room, so I trusted Him.

I got the dishwater ready,
the first sinkful in the bubbles
and washed them
and rinsed them
and put them in the drainer
and held on to the sink to keep from walking away.
(TRUTH)
When I felt sure I wouldn’t walk away
I finished the dishes completely,
even to wiping the counters.
I looked back at my kitchen,
it looked so clean and big.

No the floor wasn’t mopped,
the stove wasn’t clean,
the refridgerater still had science projects flourishing,
but I had done what God asked me to do.

And you know what,
once those two things were accomplished.
The mountain just kind of melted
and I was able to organize my duties.

Was I always perfect after that? No
Did I still struggle from time to time? Yes
Did discouragement still show up? Yes
But I wasn’t alone with my struggle;
because God made it plain to me
“I will be with you, I will never leave you”

Even with a sink full of dirty dishes.

To this day, I feel undone if my bed isn’t made
first thing in the morning.

Habit definition –
a settled tendency or usual manner of behavior
a behavior pattern acquired by frequent repetition

Philippians 4:13
I can do all things
[which He has called me to do]
through Him who strengthens and empowers me
[to fulfill His purpose—
I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency;
I am ready for anything
and equal to anything through Him
who infuses me with inner strength and confident peace.]

Song of Trust in God’s Protection

In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah:

“We have a strong city;
[the Lord] sets up salvation as walls and bulwarks.

“Open the gates, that the [uncompromisingly] righteous nation
which keeps her faith and her troth [with God] may enter in.

“You will guard him and keep him in perfect and constant peace
whose mind [both its inclination and its character]
is stayed on You, because he commits himself to You,
leans on You, and hopes confidently in You.

“So trust in the Lord
(commit yourself to Him,
lean on Him,
hope confidently in Him) forever;
for the Lord God is an everlasting Rock
[the Rock of Ages].”

God’s Mercy and Loving-kindness

feb10-evning-light-002

Your mercy and lovingkindness, O Lord, extend to the skies,
and Your faithfulness [reaches] to the clouds.

Your righteousness is like the mountains of God,
Your judgments are like the great deep.
O Lord, You preserve man and beast.

How precious is Your steadfast love, O God!
The children of men take refuge
and put their trust under the shadow of Your wings.

They relsisih and feast on the abundance of Your house;
and You cause them to drink of the stream of Your pleasures.

For with You is the fountain of life
[the fountain of life-giving water];
in Your light do we see light.

O continue Your lovingkindness to those who know You,
Your righteousness (salvation) the upright in heart.

The 23rd Psalm

The Lord, the Psalmist’s Shepherd.

A Psalm of David.

The Lord is my Shepherd
[to feed, to guide and to shield me],
I shall not lack.
He makes me lie down in (fresh, tender) green pastures;
He leads me beside the still and restful waters.
He refreshes and restores my life (my self);
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
[uprightness and right standing with Him–
not for my earning it, but]
for His name’s sake.
Yes, though I walk through
the [deep, sunless] valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear or dread no evil, for You are with me;
Your rod [to protect] and Your staff [to guide],
they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil*;
My [brimming] cup runs over
Surely or only goodness, mercy and unfailing love
shall follow me all the days of my life,
and through the length of my days the house 0f the Lord
[and His presence] shall be my dwelling place.

Amplified Bible

*footnote
It is difficult for those living in a temperate climate to appreciate,
but it was customary in hot climates to anoint the body with oil
to portect it frome xcessive perspiration.
When mixed with perfume, the oil imparted
a delightfully refreshing and invigorationg sensation.
Athletes anointed their bodies
as a matter of course before running a race.
As the body, therefore, anointed with oil was refreshed,
invigorated, and better fitted for action,
so the Lord would anoint His “sheep” with the Holy Spirit.
Whom oil symbolizies,
to fit them to engage more freely in His service
and run the the way He directs–in heavenly fellowship with Him.

Proverbs 3:1-14

The Rewards of Wisdom

My son, do not forget my [a]teaching,
But let your heart keep my commandments;

For length of days and years of life [worth living]
And tranquility and prosperity [the wholeness of life’s blessings]
they will add to you.

Do not let mercy and kindness and truth leave you
[instead let these qualities define you];
Bind them [securely] around your neck,
Write them on the tablet of your heart.

So find favor and high esteem
In the sight of God and man.

Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart
And do not rely on your own insight or understanding.

[b]In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him,
And He will make your paths straight and smooth
[removing obstacles that block your way].

Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the Lord [with reverent awe and obedience]
and turn [entirely] away from evil.

It will be health to your body
[your marrow, your nerves, your sinews, your muscles—all your inner parts]
And refreshment (physical well-being) to your bones.

Honor the Lord with your wealth
And with the first fruits of all your crops (income);

Then your barns will be abundantly filled
And your vats will overflow with new wine.

My son, do not reject or take lightly the discipline of the Lord
[learn from your mistakes and the testing
that comes from His correction through discipline];
Nor despise His rebuke,

For those whom the Lord loves He corrects,
Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.

Happy [blessed, considered fortunate, to be admired]
is the man who finds [skillful and godly] wisdom,
And the man who gains understanding and insight
[learning from God’s word and life’s experiences],

For wisdom’s profit is better than the profit of silver,
And her gain is better than fine gold.

Hebrews 11:23-26

By faith Moses, after his birth,
was hidden for three months by his parents,
because they saw he was a beautiful and divinely favored child;
and they were not afraid of the king’s (Pharaoh’s) decree.
By faith Moses, when he had grown up,
refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,
because he preferred to endure the hardship of the people of God
rather than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin.
He considered the reproach of the Christ
[that is, the rebuke he would suffer for his faithful obedience to God]
to be greater wealth than all the treasures of Egypt;
for he looked ahead to the reward [promised by God].

November 5, Today’s thought – Psalm 77

oct  28 015Beautiful Fall Cornstalks

Good Morning

Psalm 77
1 I will cry to God with my voice, even to God with my voice, and He will give ear and hearken to me.

2 In the day of my trouble I seek (inquire of and desperately require) the Lord; in the night my hand is stretched out [in prayer] without slacking up; I refuse to be comforted.

3 I [earnestly] remember God; I am disquieted and I groan; I muse in prayer, and my spirit faints [overwhelmed]. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!

4 You hold my eyes from closing; I am so troubled that I cannot speak.

5 I consider the days of old, the years of bygone times [of prosperity].

6 I call to remembrance my song in the night; with my heart I meditate and my spirit searches diligently:

7 Will the Lord cast off forever? And will He be favorable no more?

8 Have His mercy and loving-kindness ceased forever? Have His promises ended for all time?

9 Has God [deliberately] abandoned or forgotten His graciousness? Has He in anger shut up His compassion? Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!

10 And I say, This [apparent desertion of Israel by God] is my appointed lot and trial, but I will recall the years of the right hand of the Most High [in loving-kindness extended toward us], for this is my grief, that the right hand of the Most High changes.

11 I will [earnestly] recall the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will [earnestly] remember the wonders [You performed for our fathers] of old.

12 I will meditate also upon all Your works and consider all Your [mighty] deeds.

13 Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary [in holiness, away from sin and guilt]. Who is a great God like our God?

14 You are the God Who does wonders; You have demonstrated Your power among the peoples.

15 You have with Your [mighty] arm redeemed Your people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!

16 When the waters [at the Red Sea and the Jordan] saw You, O God, they were afraid; the deep shuddered also, for [all] the waters saw You.

17 The clouds poured down water, the skies sent out a sound [of rumbling thunder]; Your arrows went forth [in forked lightning].

18 The voice of Your thunder was in the whirlwind, the lightnings illumined the world; the earth trembled and shook.

19 Your way [in delivering Your people] was through the sea, and Your paths through the great waters, yet Your footsteps were not traceable, but were obliterated.

20 You led Your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron. The Amplified Bible

I have so felt just like David many times during the past few months.

Striving to remember . . . Today
With my prayers, desiring yours, Leslie
