January 26, Today’s thought — Our Part

may62012 roses 003It is time to prune these roses.

Good Morning

I have fought a good fight,
I have finished my course,
I have kept the faith
2 Timothy 4:7

The best any of us can do in this world is but a fragment.
“The old prophet thought his work had failed because Baalism was not yet entirely destroyed. Then we was told of three other men, who would come after him–tow kins and then another prophet, who each in turn would do his part, when at last the destruction of the great alien ‘idolatry’ would be complete. Elijah’s faithfulness had not failed, but his achievement was only a fragment of the whole work.
We are not responsible for finishing everything we begin. It may be our part only to begin it; the carrying on and finishing of it may be the work of others. They may be those we know or do not know and perhaps others not yet born. We all enter into the work of those who have gone before us, and others who come after us shall in turn enter into our work. Our duty simply is to do well and faithfully our own little part. Why fret over what we cannot do when that which we can do will occupy all our time. What we cannot do is not our responsibility. It belongs to some other worker, waiting even now, perhaps, in some obscure place, who at the right moment will come forth with new zeal and dedicated skill, anointed for his task.”   ~~ J.R. Miller

January 23, Today’s thought – God Leads Before

sheep(tndickersondiaries.blogspot.com)

Good Morning

He putteth forth his own sheep. John 10:4

This is the Blessed Life—
not anxious to see far in front,
nor careful about the next step,
not eager to choose the path,
nor weighted with the heavy responsibilities of the future,
but quietly following behind the Shepherd, one step at a time.

“God is in every tomorrow,
Therefore I live for today,
Certain of finding at sunrise,
Guidance and strength for the way;
Power for each moment of weakness,
Hope for each moment of pain,
Comfort for every sorrow,
Sunshine and joy after rain.”

January 22, Today’s thought – God’s Timing

redding jan2013 001A snow-covered Mount Shasta, as seen from Anderson, CA

God will always give what is right to his people who cry to him night and day, and he will not be slow to answer them.    Luke 18:7 NCV

Why does God wait until the money is gone?
Why does He wait until the sickness had lingered?
Why does He choose to wait until the other side of the grave to answer the prayers for healing?

I don’t know.
I only know His time is always right.
I can only say He will do what is best. . .
Though you hear nothing, He is speaking.
Though you see nothing, He is acting.
With God there are no accidents.
Every incident is intended to bring us closer to Him.

January 16 – Today’s thoughts – Hidden in the Cleft of the Rock

Could it be that the darkest places in our lives are when God puts us in the cleft of the rock and then He passes by to do the work that needs to be done and when we come out of the cleft we see how abundantly above He answered our prayers and worked things together in a way so ‘much higher’ than our thoughts?

rock-cleft

Yes, the cleft is a hard place, it is rock. It is dark. It is a dead end place we cannot see what is ahead. It is also a place of shelter. A place of refuge, A place of safety, A place of protection. It is a place by God. It is a place whose foundation is a rock. It is a place where God’s hand supports my leaning weak frame. It is the center of God’s will.

And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight. Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.
(God)And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.
(Moses)And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence. For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.
And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.
(Moses)And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.
(God)And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy. And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live. And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by: And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen. Exodus 33:12-23

Close To Him
God never would send you the darkness, If He felt you could bear the light;
But you would not cling to His guiding hand If the way were always bright;
And you would not care to walk by faith Could you always walk by sight.

So He sends you the blinding darkness, And the furnace of sevenfold heat;
‘Tis the only way, believe me, To keep you close to His feet;
For ’tis always so easy to wander When our lives are glad and sweet.

Then nestle your hand in your Father’s, And sing, if you can, as you go;
Your song may cheer someone behind you Whose courage is sinking low.

January 11, Today’s thoughts — God Helps the Helpless

sept52012 001A sunrise seen at Cozy Acres, but not today’s.

Good Morning

“Don’t think you’re going to get anything from the Master that way, adrift at sea, keeping all your options open.” James 1:7,8 (The Message)
For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. Jamess 1:7-8 (KJV)

We’ve all heard the old saying, “God helps those who help themselves.” While the sentiments behind this whimsical adage are admirable, the saying itself is quite untrue.
Yes, it is true that a person shouldn’t sit around aimlessly all day just expecting God to do this or that for them, while they themselves do nothing. But the adage errs significantly by failing to realize that God in fact does not help those who help themselves; rather, He helps the helpless.
He is the Defender of the defenseless;
He rescues the perishing,
saves those who are falling,
and lifts ups those who have been struck down.
He is a Father to the orphan,
a Friend to sinners,
and the Champion of those who are weak.
Indeed, Paul summed it up — “when we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly” (Romans 5:6).
The problem with “helping yourself” and asking God for a little assistance is that you’re the one still calling the shots — keeping all your options open. Few things are more insulting to God than for a man to come before Him while holding onto other options….just in case the “God thing” doesn’t work out.
Remember Lazarus, the dead man? He had no options whatsoever. Jesus stood before the cold stone which sealed his tomb and ordered it removed, and then called out, “Lazarus, come forth!” And the dead man did so, now fully alive. A significant part of this event is contained in the name Lazarus — it means “without help.” You see? God helps the helpless.
Like Lazarus of old lying cold in his tomb, you and I will never be called into a new and deeper, more vibrant and wondrous walk with Jesus until we realize we truly have no other options but God.
Peter was speaking for all of us that day when he said, “Lord, there is no one else that we can go to! Your words give eternal life” (John 6:68).~~Rylie

January 9, Today’s thought – God’s Ways

.

Good Morning

from Streams in the Desert, Vol. 1.
I love this devotional. I’m always reminded of how limited and short-sighted I am when compared with the wisdom of God’s plan.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways,
and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9

I kept for nearly a year the flask-shaped cocoon of an emperor moth. It is very peculiar in its construction. A narrow opening is left in the neck of the flask through which the perfect insect forces it s way, so that a forsaken cocoon is as entire as one still tenanted, no rupture of the interlacing fibers having taken place. The great disproportion between the means of egress and the size of the imprisoned insect makes one wonder how the exit is ever accomplished at all–and it never is without great labor and difficulty. It is supposed that the pressure to which the moth’s body is subjected in pressure through such a narrow opening is a provision of nature for forcing the juices into the vessels of the wings, these being less developed at the period of emerging from the chrysalis than they are in other insects.
I happened to witness the first efforts of my prison-ed moth to escape from its long confinement. During a whole forenoon, from time to time, I watched it patiently striving and struggling to get out. It never seemed able to get beyond a certain point, and at last my patience was exhausted. Very probably the confining fibers were drier and less elastic than if the cocoon had been left all winter on its native heather, as nature meant it to be. At all events I thought I was wiser and more compassionate than its Maker, and I resolved to give it a helping hand. With the point of my scissors I snipped the confining threads to make the exit just a very little easier, and lo! immediately, and with perfect ease, out crawled my moth dragging a huge swollen body and little shriveled wings. In vain I watched to see that marvelous process of expansion in which these silently and swiftly develop before one’s eyes; and as I traced the exquisite spots and markings of divers colors which were all there in miniature, I longed to see these assume their due proportions and the creature to appear in all its perfect beauty, as it is , in truth, one of the loveliest of its kind. But I looked in vain. My false tenderness had proved its ruin. It never was anything, but a stunted abortion, crawling painfully though that brief life which it should have spent flying through the air on rainbow wings. I have thought of it often when watching with pitiful eyes those who were struggling with sorrow, suffering, and distress; and I would fain cut short the discipline and give deliverance. Short-sighted man! How know I that one of these pangs or groans could be spared? The far-sighted, perfect love that seeks the perfection of its object does not weakly shrink from present transient suffering. Our Father’s love is too true to be weak. Because He loves His children,, He chastises them that they may be partakers of His holiness. With this end in view, He spares not for their crying. Made perfect through sufferings, as the Elder Brother was, the sons of God are trained up to obedience and brought to glory through much tribulation. — Tract.

January 7, Today’s thought — Earnest Prayer

Good Morning

James 5:13-16
Is any among you afflicted? let him pray.
Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church;
and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
And the prayer of faith shall save the sick,
and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins,
they shall be forgiven him.
Confess your faults one to another,
and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.
The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

The Lord’s answers to prayer are infinitely perfect, and they will show that often when we were asking for a stone that looked like bread , He was giving us bread that to our shortsightedness looked like a stone.  ~ J. Southley

THE UNANSWERED PRAYER

She asked to be made like her Saviour;
He took her right then at her word,
And sent her a heart-crushing burden
Till the depths of her soul were stirred.

She wanted a meek, lowly spirit–
The work He gave answered that cry,
Till some who had once been companions,
With a pitying smile passed her by.

She asked to lean hard on her Saviour,
He took human props quite away,
Till no earthly friend could give comfort,
And she could do nothing but pray.

She had prayed to be made like the Saviour,
And the burdens He gave her to her
Had been but the great Sculptor’s teaching;
To help answer her earnest prayer. Unknown

. . .The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working]. James 5:16b

January 5, Today’s thought — Let There Be Light

Good Morning

And God said, “Let there be light.” (Genesis 1:3)

The first words we have on record of God speaking are highly instructive. “Let there be light” means far, far more than mere sunshine. In fact, the sun and moon were not made until the 4th day of Creation, yet Light was already so. What, then, did God mean when He said, “Let there be light”?

To find the answer, we need to look elsewhere in the Bible to see if there is any “light” shed upon this mystery.
The first thing we discover is that the Bible tells us — “God is light” (1John 1:5). The same author later writes twice that “God is love” (ch. 4:8, and 4:16). Thus we can surmise that “light” and “love” are spiritual synonyms; interchangeable with one another without compromising the express meaning of either.

With this in mind, we look back at the Genesis declaration and conclude that when God said, “Let there be Light,” He was in fact saying — “Let there be a revelation of My love!”

And there was.

In fact, everything that occurs in creation and in the Bible from that moment forward is in complete compliance with that unalterable decree. And the implications of this for us today are profound.

What would each day hold in store for us if we walked through every situation looking for how this or that could reveal something of God’s love to us. And just maybe, once we began to see this, we ourselves could learn to reveal God’s love to others around us.

Let there be light! — the single most powerful sentence you could ever say. ~~Rylie

January 4, Today’s thought – Compassion

Good Morning

Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people. Luke 7:12-16

The mourners didn’t cause him to stop.
Nor did the large crowd,
or even the body of the dead man on the stretcher.
It was the woman–
the look on here face and the redness in her eyes.
He knew immediately what was happening.
It was here son who was being carried out, her only son.
And if anyone knows the pain that comes from losing your only son,
God does.

So he did it;
he went into action.
“Don’t cry,” he told the mother.
“Arise,” he told the boy.

The dead man spoke, devil ran, and the people were reminded of this truth: For those who know the Author of Life, death is nothing more than Satan’s dead-man’s-bluff. Max Lucado

Jesus didn’t let the busyness of life, distract him for the focus of his mission – to seek and save that which was lost.

January 2 – Salt

Good Morning

My ponderings from Sunday Morning’s message.

The text – Leviticus 2:13
And every oblation of thy meat offering
shalt thou season with salt;
neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God
to be lacking from thy meat offering:
with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt.

Meat Offering consisted of minchah;
minchah is explained . . . to be an offering of fine flour, with oil and frankincense.
It was in general a eucharistic or gratitude offering . . .Clarke’s Commentary

With every gratitude offering offer  SALT  —
worship, praise, submission/yielding to God’s will
and the sacrifice of my own will to His.

The salt of the covenant is the part that makes the covenant real,
valid and worthy to be adhered to and honored.

Dear Lord, May my offering to you today and each day of the coming new yearbe salty in your eyes. Amen.

As I felt my need of God’s help, I thought of this  song,

Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home

When my way grows drear
Precious Lord linger near
When my life is almost gone
Hear my cry, hear my call
Hold my hand lest I fall
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home

When the darkness appears
And the night draws near
And the day is past and gone
At the river I stand
Guide my feet, hold my hand
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home

Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I’m tired, I’m weak, I’m lone
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home

Thomas Dorsey(1899–1993) wrote “Precious Lord” in response to his inconsolable bereavement at the death of his wife, Nettie Harper, in childbirth, and his infant son in August 1932 (Wikipedia)

January 1, ‘the eyes of the Lord are upon it’

Good Morning

From Streams in the desert, vol 1, this is my very favorite New Year’s devotion. I receive such hope and comfort from knowing ‘thy God careth’ and ‘the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it’.

Deuteronomy 11:11-14  But the land, whither ye go to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven:    A land which the LORD thy God careth for: the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.  And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the LORD your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,   That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.

Today, dear friends, we stand upon the verge of the unknown. there lies before us the new year and we are going forth to possess it. Who can tell what we shall find? What new experiences, what changes shall come, what new needs shall arise? But here is the cheering, comforting, gladdening message from our Heavenly Father.
“The Lord thy God careth for it.”
“His eyes are upon it away to the ending of the year.”

All our supply is to come from the Lord. Here are springs that shall never dry; here are fountains and streams that shall never be cut off. Here, anxious one, is the gracious pledge of the Heavenly Father. If He be the Source of our mercies they can never fail us. No heat, no drought can parch that river, “the streams whereof make glad the city of God.”
The land is a land of hills and valleys. It is not all smooth nor all down hill. If life were all one dead level the dull sameness would oppress us; we want the hills and the valleys. The hills collect the rain for a hundred fruitful valleys. Ah, so it is with us! It is the hill difficulty that drives us to the throne of grace and brings down the shower of blessing; the hills, the bleak hills of life that we wonder at and perhaps grumble at, bring down the shower. How many have perished in the wilderness, buried under its golden sands, who would have lived and thriven in the hill-country; how many would have been killed by the frost, blighted wit winds, swept desolate of tree and fruit but for the hill–stern, hard, rugged, so steep to climb. God’s hills are a precious protection for His people against their foes!

We cannot tell what loss and sorrow and trial are doing. Trust only. The Father comes near to take our hand and lead us on our way today. It shall be a good, a blessed new year!

He leads us on by paths we did not know;
Upward He leads us, though our steps be slow,
Though oft we faint and falter on the way,
Though storms and darkness oft obscure the day;
Yet when the clouds are one,
We know He leads us on.

 He leads us on through all the unquiet years;
Past all our dreamland hopes, and doubts and fears,
He guides our steps, though all the tangled maze
of losses, sorrows, and o’eclouded days;
We know His will is done:
And still He leads us on. N. L. Zinzendorf.

December 31, Today’s thought – Forgetting and Remembering

Good Afternoon

Philippians 3:13-14 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Forgetting ills behind me, the sorrows past and gone.
Forgetting all my wandering, too sad to dwell upon.
Remembering God’s great goodness, in times of stress and strain ,
Remembering His restorings, I praise my God again.

We stand together at the gateway of another year . It may be a year of may blessed experiences. Follow Him who goes before—the One who went before His people of old—a guiding light, a constant protection, an unfailing Friend and Counselor, and almighty Savior.
When shadows deepen and fear rides on the moaning wind; when joy comes, and we wander in the misty vaie of grief; when joy beckons, and our way is sunlit—“remember” His past leading and know that all is well. When specters rise hauntingly from the past, when old heartaches and sorrows seem to weigh us down and blot out the sunshine forget “those things which are behind,” and reach forward to the joys before us. Paul says, “I press toward the mark”—here there is urgency, and nothing must be allowed to hamper the runner’s progress.
We make our own hindrances many times—our Master has done all He can to free us from every weigh, giving us forgiveness for the past, help in the present, and assurance for the future. So, dear pilgrim, as we face the coming days of a new year, knowing that each one brings our Master’s return nearer, let us “lay aside every weight . . . and press toward the mark,” with singleness of heart “looking to Jesus.”

Forgetting all my doubtings, which dimmed faith’s vision bright,
Forgetting all the earth-clouds, the darkness, gloom and night,
Remembering God’s bright sunshine, and radiance of His face,
Remembering His long patience, I praise my God for grace.

Forgetting all unkindness which friends and foes have shown,
Forgetting and forgiving the wrongs that I have know,
Remembering God provided, unsought, each faithful friend,
Remembering loves devotion, I’ll praise Him to the end.

Forgetting all my pinings, when disappointments came.
Forgetting all the murmurings, which filled my soul with shame,
Remembering God was ever true to His Holy Word,
Remembering He was faithful, I praise my sovereign Lord. A.G.

Deuteronomy 8:1-2 All the commandments which I command thee this day shall ye observe to do, that ye live, and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware unto your fathers. And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.

Thou shalt remember all the way – The various dealings of God with you; the dangers and difficulties to which ye were exposed, and from which God delivered you; together with the various miracles which he wrought for you, and his longsuffering towards you. Clarke’s Commentary

December 25th – Emmanuel

images

Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign;
Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son,
and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 7:14

Now all this was done,
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet,
saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son,
and they shall call his name Emmanuel,
which being interpreted is, God with us. Matthew 1:22-23

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
and ransom captive Israel,
that mourns in lonely exile here
until the Son of God appear.

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, thou Wisdom from on high,
who orderest all things mightily;
to us the path of knowledge show,
and teach us in her ways to go.

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, thou Rod of Jesse, free
thine own from Satan’s tyranny;
from depths of hell thy people save,
and give them victory over the grave.

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, thou Dayspring, come and cheer
our spirits by thine advent here;
disperse the gloomy clouds of night,
and death’s dark shadows put to flight.

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, thou Key of David, come,
and open wide our heavenly home;
make safe the way that leads on high,
and close the path to misery.

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O come, great Lord of might,
who to thy tribes on Sinai’s height
in ancient times once gave the law
in cloud and majesty and awe.

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, thou Root of Jesse’s tree,
an ensign of thy people be;
before thee rulers silent fall;
all peoples on thy mercy call.

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, Desire of nations, bind
in one the hearts of all mankind;
bid thou our sad divisions cease,
and be thyself our King of Peace.

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

O come, O come, Emmanuel,
and ransom captive Israel,
that mourns in lonely exile here
until the Son of God appear.

Rejoice! Rejoice!
Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel.

for we know that just as you share
and are partners in [our] sufferings and calamities,

2Corinthians 1:7 Amplified Bible

Half past Twelve, and little Wendy still hadn’t come home for lunch. I called her friend’s house and asked her mother to please send my daughter home. A few minutes later, Wendy came dragging dejectedly into the kitchen.
“What’s wrong?” I asked. “Why didn’t you come home at noon when you were supposed to?”
“Donna lost her birthday dollar,” Wendy replied.
“Oh, I see. Did you stay longer to help her look for the money?”
“No, Mother, I just stayed to help her cry.”
As I kissed Wendy’s sweet cheek, the word empathy came to mind. More than “sympathy” which is looking down and p;itying, empathy gets down and shares. ~~Rosalyn Hart Finch
