Proverbs 3:1-14

The Rewards of Wisdom

My son, do not forget my [a]teaching,
But let your heart keep my commandments;

For length of days and years of life [worth living]
And tranquility and prosperity [the wholeness of life’s blessings]
they will add to you.

Do not let mercy and kindness and truth leave you
[instead let these qualities define you];
Bind them [securely] around your neck,
Write them on the tablet of your heart.

So find favor and high esteem
In the sight of God and man.

Trust in and rely confidently on the Lord with all your heart
And do not rely on your own insight or understanding.

[b]In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him,
And He will make your paths straight and smooth
[removing obstacles that block your way].

Do not be wise in your own eyes;
Fear the Lord [with reverent awe and obedience]
and turn [entirely] away from evil.

It will be health to your body
[your marrow, your nerves, your sinews, your muscles—all your inner parts]
And refreshment (physical well-being) to your bones.

Honor the Lord with your wealth
And with the first fruits of all your crops (income);

Then your barns will be abundantly filled
And your vats will overflow with new wine.

My son, do not reject or take lightly the discipline of the Lord
[learn from your mistakes and the testing
that comes from His correction through discipline];
Nor despise His rebuke,

For those whom the Lord loves He corrects,
Even as a father corrects the son in whom he delights.

Happy [blessed, considered fortunate, to be admired]
is the man who finds [skillful and godly] wisdom,
And the man who gains understanding and insight
[learning from God’s word and life’s experiences],

For wisdom’s profit is better than the profit of silver,
And her gain is better than fine gold.

Endeavor to be Patient

octoner 21 chickens stampede 004
Thankful for the gift of fresh range-free eggs.

This morning I read these thoughts.
How they spoke to my sometimes over critical heart.

And what doth the Lord require of thee,
but to do justly,
and to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with thy God?
–Micah 6:8.

Endeavor to be patient in bearing with the defects and infirmities of others,
of what sort soever they be;
for that thyself also hast many failings which must be borne with by others.
If thou canst not make thyself such an one as thou wouldest,
how canst thou expect to have another in all things to thy liking?
THOMAS À KEMPIS

Put on therefore… kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long-suffering.
–Colossians 3:12

Yarn Along – New Beginnings

Yarn Along
~ Two of my favorite things are knitting and reading and I love sharing my projects and current reads here.~
This is how Lisa begins her blog, Small Things, on Wednesdays.

Many of the wonderful items, knitted or crocheted,
I see get added to my someday list.
Books and authors, new to me, peak my interest.

I haven’t knitted since I can’t remember.

In my wanderings yesterday I visited
a favorite yarn shop in downtown Sacramento,CA.
A little voice whispered in my ear,
Look at those!
I looked.
I fondled.
I asked for a pattern for toddler sox.
(Even though I knew I had a pattern at home.)
I walked out with a little seed planted in my heart.

Maybe I’m waking up again.

I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day

The Story Behind
“I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day”
by Tom Stewart edited by me
December 20, 2001

Peace on Earth, Goodwill to men.One of America’s best known poets, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882), contributed to the wealth of carols sung each Christmas season, when he composed the words to “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” on December 25th 1864. The carol was originally a poem, “Christmas Bells,” containing seven stanzas. Two stanzas were omitted, which contained references to the American Civil War, thus giving us the carol in its present form. The poem gave birth to the carol, “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” and the remaining five stanzas were slightly rearranged in 1872 by John Baptiste Calkin (1827-1905), who also gave us the memorable tune. When Longfellow penned the words to his poem, America was still months away from Lee’s surrender to Grant at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865; and, his poem reflected the prior years of the war’s despair, while ending with a confident hope of triumphant peace.

A Son is given.

” For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon His shoulder: and His Name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.  Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon His Kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with Judgment and with Justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will perform this” Isaiah 9:6-7

As with any composition that touches the heart of the hearer, “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day” flowed from the experience of Longfellow– involving the tragic death of his wife Fanny and the crippling injury of his son Charles from war wounds. Henry married Frances Appleton on July 13th 1843, and they settled down in the historic Craigie House overlooking the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They were blessed with the birth of their first child, Charles, on June 9th 1844, and eventually, the Longfellow household numbered five children– Charles, Ernest, Alice, Edith, and Allegra. Alice, the Longfellows’ third child and first daughter, was delivered, while her mother was under the anesthetic influence of ether– the first in North America.

Tragedy struck both the nation and the Longfellow family in 1861. Confederate Gen. Pierre G. T. Beauregard fired the opening salvos of the American Civil War on April 12th, and Fanny Longfellow was fatally burned in an accident in the library of Craigie House on July 10th. The day before the accident, Fanny Longfellow recorded in her journal: “We are all sighing for the good sea breeze instead of this stifling land one filled with dust. Poor Allegra is very droopy with heat, and Edie has to get her hair in a net to free her neck from the weight.” After trimming some of seven year old Edith’s beautiful curls, Fanny decided to preserve the clippings in sealing wax. Melting a bar of sealing wax with a candle, a few drops fell unnoticed upon her dress. The longed for sea breeze gusted through the window, igniting the light material of Fanny’s dress– immediately wrapping her in flames. In her attempt to protect Edith and Allegra, she ran to Henry’s study in the next room, where Henry frantically attempted to extinguish the flames with a nearby, but undersized throw rug. Failing to stop the fire with the rug, he tried to smother the flames by throwing his arms around Frances– severely burning his face, arms, and hands. Fanny Longfellow died the next morning. Too ill from his burns and grief, Henry did not attend her funeral. (Incidentally, the trademark full beard of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow arose from his inability to shave after this tragedy.)

The first Christmas after Fanny’s death, Longfellow wrote, “How inexpressibly sad are all holidays.” A year after the incident, he wrote, “I can make no record of these days. Better leave them wrapped in silence. Perhaps someday God will give me peace.” Longfellow’s journal entry for December 25th 1862 reads: “‘A merry Christmas’ say the children, but that is no more for me.” Almost a year later, Longfellow received word that his oldest son Charles, a lieutenant in the Army of the Potomac, had been severely wounded with a bullet passing under his shoulder blades and taking off one of the spinal processes. The Christmas of 1863 was silent in Longfellow’s journal. Finally, on Christmas Day of 1864, he wrote the words of the poem, “Christmas Bells.” The reelection of Abraham Lincoln or the possible end of the terrible war may have been the occasion for the poem. Lt. Charles Longfellow did not die that Christmas, but lived. So, contrary to popular belief, the occasion of writing that much loved Christmas carol was not due to Charles’ death.

Longfellow’s Christmas bells loudly proclaimed, “God is not dead.” Even more, the bells announced, “Nor doth He sleep.” God’s Truth, Power, and Justice are affirmed, when Longfellow wrote: “The wrong shall fail, the right prevail.” The message that the Living God is a God of Peace is proclaimed in the close of the carol: “Of peace on Earth, good will to men.”

bells in a row

“Christmas Bells”
(The original poem, complete with all seven stanzas)

“I heard the bells on Christmas Day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet
The words repeat
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along
The unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Till, ringing, singing on its way,
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime
A chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

Then from each black accursed mouth
The cannon thundered in the South,
And with the sound
The carols drowned
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

It was as if an earthquake rent
The hearth-stones of a continent,
And made forlorn
The households born
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!

And in despair I bowed my head;
“There is no peace on earth,” I said;
“For hate is strong,
And mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good-will to men!”

Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
“God is not dead; nor doth he sleep!
The Wrong shall fail,
The Right prevail,
With peace on earth, good-will to men!”

The Longest Night

dec 27 001Winter Solstice

And so the Shortest Day came and the year died
And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world
Came people singing, dancing,
To drive the dark away.
They lighted candles in the winter trees;
They hung their homes with evergreen;
They burned beseeching fires all night long
To keep the year alive.
And when the new year’s sunshine blazed awake
They shouted, revelling.
Through all the frosty ages you can hear them
Echoing behind us – listen!
All the long echoes, sing the same delight,
This Shortest Day,
As promise wakens in the sleeping land:
They carol, feast, give thanks,
And dearly love their friends,
And hope for peace.
And now so do we, here, now,
This year and every year.

Tale of Six Bears

My daughter, Emily, Quilt’m by Sunflower Designs,
asked me help with a Christ project.

This is my tale.

6bears

Tale of Six Bears

My name is Alvin.
I sing as good as the chipmunk.
I love to sing and play.
My special talents are keeping secrets and making memories.

My name is Bill.
I’m a hard worker and I enjoy working.
My special talent is seeing what could be and making that dream real.

My name is Curtis.
I am your first love.
I’ll give you your first kiss.
You’ll never forget me.
My special talent is being your LOVE memories’ cornerstone.

My name is ‘Big D’.
I climb the highest towers.
I drive the rockiest roads.
I know all about life’s potholes.
My special talent is proving true the saying
“When life gives you lemons make cold, refreshing lemonade. “.

My name is Everett, steadfast and faithful.
I always want the best for you
I only have eyes for you.
My special talent is keeping my vows for’ever’.
My name is Ferguson.
I am a gentle giant.
I care immensely for those I love,
so don’t touch my people.
My special talent is treating everyone with thoughtfulness and kindness.

Hi, I’m Leslie, Emily’s mom.
I was given your boxes of clothing
to help her with the Christmas projects.

Truthfully making quilts from clothing
is not easy or as much fun as working with new fabric.
And as the project nears completion,
it is not until the quilting is done before we see any beauty.

When you asked Emily to make bears,
she and I had never made a bear.
So it was with a little anxiety I started bear making.

12 of this piece,
24 of that piece,
be sure the Hawaiian swim trunks are in everything.

I f were to start over
there are many things I’d do a little differently,
because now I know what to do to make a more
professional looking bear.

But, we know the owner of the clothing wasn’t perfect either.
Loved, yes, treasured yes, missed – forever.

So I hope you over look the funny bumps and lumps of these bears.

It wasn’t until I put the eyes, nose and mouth on the first bear
that I fell in love.
My heart opened.
and spoke of those I love.

Alvin is my first son, Aaron.
He also sings.
Sometimes like a chipmunk,
often like an angel.
You can trust with your secrets.
As a father of three sons,
he works hard for them to have good memories,

Bill is my father, William Lee, Bill.
He could look at bare land and see a garden,
a junk car and see the restored ’56 Buick Special
He saw my husband’s dream and made it come true.

Curtis is my first love, Curtis Ray Lee.
Third grade kisser running by fast and
caught me on the cheek, laughing all the time.
He gave me the cornerstone memory,
love is full of laughter.

Big D is my other son, Dan
A bright, intelligent boy who could look
at something and figure out how it worked.
April, 2000,at 20 He married a beautiful woman with a 4 year old daughter.
And life sent a pothole 9 months later
when his bride was stricken with a disease
and hasn’t had a pain free day since.
He knows all about lemonade

Everett is my husband, Elmer.
We married in June, 1967 at 25-him and 17-me
Ever word I wrote is true.

Ferguson is my son-in-law Travis
He loves guns just a very little bit less
than he loves my daughter and his children
He is a gentle giant
I wouldn’t want to change a thing about him.

My husband said
“put the names in the pockets”

that is your decision.

but maybe the new owners of the bears might need
just a little bit of hope.

Sharing with Ginny and Yarn Along.
This is why my needles are resting.

Memorable Moment
Referring again to dusted off dressmaking skills,
the sigh of expelled breath when the garment fit – the first time,
(only a little deeper seam at the top of princess seams to smooth the neckline) but all the important parts fit!
Panic moment – when I realized I cut part of the garment one length and the rest shorter.
The client wanted it longer than shown in the picture on the envelope. I had to finish it shorter than planned.
Out come – perfect length.
Thankful to the Master Tailor.

After looking for my coupon and not finding it,
I made my holiday purchase.
In the car checking my email again, I found the coupon.
I walked back in hesitatingly but feeling it wouldn’t hurt to ask.
Same cashier. I explained I found my coupon
and could an adjustment be made.
And even in Christmas buying rush, she adjusted my total.

Meditation
One morning I was thinking about meeting God before I started my day. Sometimes I rush into my day and it is much later before I slow down.
I thought how God probably waits every morning
to welcome me as his daughter to prepare me for my day.
What does welcome mean?

W – Waiting with great anticipatiom
E – Excited to know you are coming
L – Long for time to chat and share, tears and strenghts
C – Comforted by your love
O – Overwhelmed with encouragement
M – Mindful of your grace
E – Every morning, new for my receiving and renewing

Facebook Friends
Without this media I would not be as connected with cousins, nieces and nephews,
brothers (through their wives), children and grandchildren, extended family and REAL Friends.
I would think about them and remember old times
but with some – our paths rarely crossed
and with others paths crossed only occasionally.
I love reading about what they are doing and what they are interested in,
and seeing how fast their little ones are growing.
Yes, I admit I spend time checking on my friends –

Truth

Meditation
Another devotional reading from 3/2010

The Lord is near to all who call upon Him,
to all who call upon Him in truth. Psalm 145:18

It is always possible to be thankful for
what is given rather than to complain about what is not given.
One or the other becomes a habit of life.

Many women have told me that my husband’s advice,
which I once quoted in a book,
has been an eye-opener to them.
He said that a wife, if she is very generous,
may allow that her hauband lives up to perhaps 80% of her expectations.
There is always the other 20% that she would like to change,
and she may chip away at it for the whole of their married life
with out reducing it by very much.
She may, on the other hand, simply decide to enjoy the 80%
and both of them will be happy.
It is a down-to-earth illustration of a principle.

Accept, positively and actively, what is given.
Let thanksgiving be the habit ofyour life.

Such acceptance is not possible without
a deep and abiding belief in the Sovereign love of God.
Either He is in charge, or He is not.
Either He loves us, or He does not.
If He is in charge and loves us,
then whatever is given us is subject to His control
and is meant untimately for our joy.

she is a caring loving mom to her children

she is a true Christian
and I am blessed to say – my friend.

1st step didn’t happen yesterday.
But LOOK I get another opportunity today.

Meditation
March, 2010 – a life changing event occurred.
I read this devotion during that unsettling time and gained strength.

He had made everything beautiful in its time.Ecclesiastes 3:11

Sunrise, noon, sunset, midnight.
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
January, May, September,
Winter, spring, summer, autumn.
Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas.
These are the punctuation marks of time,
and what a marvelous mercy that God divided light from darkness
“and the evening and the morning were the first day”. . .

“For everything its season
and for every activity under heaven its time,” wrote Qpholeth,
the preacher of the book of Ecclestiastes.
For birth, death, planting and uprooting,
killing and healing, pulling down and building up,
weeping and laughing, mourning and dancing,
scattering stones and gathering them,
embracing and refraining, seeking and losing,
keeping and throwing away, tearing and mending.
There are times for silence and speech,
for love and hate, for war and peace.

For the Christian, time is transfigured as we see it
held in love of God, created by and for Jesus Christ,
to whom belongs the primacy over all created things and
who existed before everything and holds everything together.

Always ready to help
A happy man who loves God
He is thankful
His theme ‘Endure all things”,
He does this with grace.

1st step: I will do thissssss!

Meditation: one of my favaorite poems
Laid on the altar, oh my Lord Divine
Accept my gift this day for Jesus’ sake
I have no jewels to adorn thine shrine
Nor any world-famed sacrifices to make.
Yet here I bring within my trembling hand
This will of mine-a thing that seemth small
But thou alone, O Lord, canst understand
How, when I yield thee this, I yield Thee all
Hidden therein, Thy searaching eye can see
Struggles of passion, visions of delight
All that I have and am, and fain would be
Fond hope, deep love, and longing infinite
It hath been wet with tears and dimmed with sighs
Clenched in my grasp till beauty it hath none
Now from Thy footstool, where it vanquished lies
The prayer ascendeth “May Thy will be done.”
Take it, O Father, ere my courage fail
And merge it so in Thine own will, that e’en
If in some desperate hour my cries prevail
And thou give back my will, it may have been
So changed, so purified, so fair have grown
So one with Thee, so filled with peace divine
I may not know it, feel it as mine own
But gaining back my will,
May find it Thine.

Memorable moment – It doesn’t matter how she feels – a welcoming smile and hug is what I receive when I visit my friend Karla, in a care home facility. We visit, sing a hymn, read a devotion/scripture and pray together. A little bit of peace in a chaotic world.

1st step – determined one more day.
This is really the hardest part of this challenge
and it’s probably the best part of the challenge, but it hurts.

Meditation from Sunday AM Message
Matthew 2:10-11
When they saw the star, they were thrilled with ecstatic joy. 11 And on going into the house, they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell down and worshiped Him. Then opening their treasure bags, they presented to Him gifts-gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
Micah 6:6-8
With what shall I come before the Lord dnd bow myself before God on high?
Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, With calves a year old?
Will the Lord be delighted with thousands of rams or with ten thousand rivers of oil?
Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, and to love kindness and mercy, and to humble yourself and walk humbly with your God?

Day 6 – 30 Day Happiness Challenge

My Memorable Moment comes first:
Sunday, the day of the Christmas play at church.
I was asked to be in charge of the food served
after the play, mainly finger foods and desserts.
redtables
Historically, we have the greatest number of visitors at this event.
I talked with others who had been in charge of the food planning and very carefully made my plans and asked families of the congregation to bring finger food, desserts, fruit, veggie trays, sandwiches and pizza. Each on asked were willing to help. I reminded each on that we usually have many visitors and to please be generous in the amount they planned on bringing.
5:00 came. The play starts at 5:30.
All most all the food had arrived.
the question began raising it’s worrisome head –
“Did I plan for enough food?”
5:45 – head count – 280+ – 100 people more than planned for!
Wise heads conferred.
Gleaners were sent out.
More pizza, Subway sandwiches, macaroni and potato salad and layered chip dip arrived.
“Lord, We have done what we could.”
hungry
We ran out of chips – didn’t think to ask the gleaners to get some.
dessert
There were leftovers!
part of a German chocolate cake, a vanilla cake, a part of a dutch apple pie, a few cinnamon rolls, some veggie tray veggies, one and half chicken/cranberry sandwiches, 3 tangerines and a small amount of sliced ham.
Praise God from who all blessing flow.

I am grateful for god’s provision, willing workers, generous food prepare-rs, happy dishwashers, and an awesome clean-up crew.

Today I am especially thankful for the many who came to me and asked “what can I do?” and the even more whom I asked for help and received willing hands, feet and smiles.

1st step: On my feet moving almost continually from 4:00-8:30.
I don’t know how many steps.
Sometimes my heart rate increased.
I’m counting this.

Meditation for 5 minutes:
Thinking on this scripture Romans 15:1-3 Amplified
We who are strong [in our convictions and of robust faith] ought to bear with the failings and the frailties and tender scruples of the weak; [we ought to help carry the doubts and qualms of others] and not just please ourselves. 2 Let each one of us make it a practice to please (make happy) his neighbor for his good and for true welfare, to edify him [to strengthen him and build him up spiritually], 3 For Christ did not please Himself [gave no thought to His own interests]; but as it is written The reproaches and abusers of those who reproached and abused you fell on Me.
Christ is our perfect example. Selah
