Yarn Along – After Christmas Hats

yarnalong_gsheller_gray

On Wednesday’s knitters go to Ginny’s to share all the wonderful projects being worked on, finished, frogged, cried over, and learned from. They also tell what they are reading and a little of the storyline or provoking thoughts. I think it is great. So many books, knitting ideas and hints on how to make knitting more enjoyable.

I have just a couple more of these wide ribbed beanies to knit, then I think  I’m done…………but maybe three nieces’ children might like one; that’s just 6 more. 🙂

Next to cast on is this hat, Chrissy from Leicester, United Kingdom, at Stitched Together is having a KAL — I didn’t want to resist.

Good Morning

from Streams in the Desert, Vol. 1.
I love this devotional. I’m always reminded of how limited and short-sighted I am when compared with the wisdom of God’s plan.

For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD.
For as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways,
and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9

I kept for nearly a year the flask-shaped cocoon of an emperor moth. It is very peculiar in its construction. A narrow opening is left in the neck of the flask through which the perfect insect forces it s way, so that a forsaken cocoon is as entire as one still tenanted, no rupture of the interlacing fibers having taken place. The great disproportion between the means of egress and the size of the imprisoned insect makes one wonder how the exit is ever accomplished at all–and it never is without great labor and difficulty. It is supposed that the pressure to which the moth’s body is subjected in pressure through such a narrow opening is a provision of nature for forcing the juices into the vessels of the wings, these being less developed at the period of emerging from the chrysalis than they are in other insects.
I happened to witness the first efforts of my prison-ed moth to escape from its long confinement. During a whole forenoon, from time to time, I watched it patiently striving and struggling to get out. It never seemed able to get beyond a certain point, and at last my patience was exhausted. Very probably the confining fibers were drier and less elastic than if the cocoon had been left all winter on its native heather, as nature meant it to be. At all events I thought I was wiser and more compassionate than its Maker, and I resolved to give it a helping hand. With the point of my scissors I snipped the confining threads to make the exit just a very little easier, and lo! immediately, and with perfect ease, out crawled my moth dragging a huge swollen body and little shriveled wings. In vain I watched to see that marvelous process of expansion in which these silently and swiftly develop before one’s eyes; and as I traced the exquisite spots and markings of divers colors which were all there in miniature, I longed to see these assume their due proportions and the creature to appear in all its perfect beauty, as it is , in truth, one of the loveliest of its kind. But I looked in vain. My false tenderness had proved its ruin. It never was anything, but a stunted abortion, crawling painfully though that brief life which it should have spent flying through the air on rainbow wings. I have thought of it often when watching with pitiful eyes those who were struggling with sorrow, suffering, and distress; and I would fain cut short the discipline and give deliverance. Short-sighted man! How know I that one of these pangs or groans could be spared? The far-sighted, perfect love that seeks the perfection of its object does not weakly shrink from present transient suffering. Our Father’s love is too true to be weak. Because He loves His children,, He chastises them that they may be partakers of His holiness. With this end in view, He spares not for their crying. Made perfect through sufferings, as the Elder Brother was, the sons of God are trained up to obedience and brought to glory through much tribulation. — Tract.

January 7, Today’s thought — Earnest Prayer

Good Morning

James 5:13-16
Is any among you afflicted? let him pray.
Is any merry? let him sing psalms.
Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church;
and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord:
And the prayer of faith shall save the sick,
and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins,
they shall be forgiven him.
Confess your faults one to another,
and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.
The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

The Lord’s answers to prayer are infinitely perfect, and they will show that often when we were asking for a stone that looked like bread , He was giving us bread that to our shortsightedness looked like a stone.  ~ J. Southley

THE UNANSWERED PRAYER

She asked to be made like her Saviour;
He took her right then at her word,
And sent her a heart-crushing burden
Till the depths of her soul were stirred.

She wanted a meek, lowly spirit–
The work He gave answered that cry,
Till some who had once been companions,
With a pitying smile passed her by.

She asked to lean hard on her Saviour,
He took human props quite away,
Till no earthly friend could give comfort,
And she could do nothing but pray.

She had prayed to be made like the Saviour,
And the burdens He gave her to her
Had been but the great Sculptor’s teaching;
To help answer her earnest prayer. Unknown

. . .The earnest (heartfelt, continued) prayer of a righteous man makes tremendous power available [dynamic in its working]. James 5:16b

Pray earnestly to God. . .Today
With my prayers,desiring yours, Leslie

January 6, Sunday Bible Reading — Acts 17:24-28

Acts 17:24-28
God that made the world and all things therein,
seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth,
dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
Neither is worshipped with men’s hands,
as though he needed any thing,
seeing he giveth to all life, and breath,
and all things;
And hath made of one blood all nations of men
for to dwell on all the face of the earth,
and hath determined the times before appointed,
and the bounds of their habitation;
That they should seek the Lord,
if haply they might feel after him,
and find him,
though he be not far from every one of us:
For in him we live, and move, and have our being;
as certain also of your own poets have said,
For we are also his offspring.

That they should seek the Lord – God, who is infinitely great and self-sufficient, has manifested himself as the maker of the world, the creator, preserver, and governor of men. He has assigned them their portion, and dispensed to them their habitations, and the various blessings of his providence, to the end that they should seek him in all his works. Clarke’s Commentary

January 5, Today’s thought — Let There Be Light

Good Morning

And God said, “Let there be light.” (Genesis 1:3)

The first words we have on record of God speaking are highly instructive. “Let there be light” means far, far more than mere sunshine. In fact, the sun and moon were not made until the 4th day of Creation, yet Light was already so. What, then, did God mean when He said, “Let there be light”?

To find the answer, we need to look elsewhere in the Bible to see if there is any “light” shed upon this mystery.
The first thing we discover is that the Bible tells us — “God is light” (1John 1:5). The same author later writes twice that “God is love” (ch. 4:8, and 4:16). Thus we can surmise that “light” and “love” are spiritual synonyms; interchangeable with one another without compromising the express meaning of either.

With this in mind, we look back at the Genesis declaration and conclude that when God said, “Let there be Light,” He was in fact saying — “Let there be a revelation of My love!”

And there was.

In fact, everything that occurs in creation and in the Bible from that moment forward is in complete compliance with that unalterable decree. And the implications of this for us today are profound.

What would each day hold in store for us if we walked through every situation looking for how this or that could reveal something of God’s love to us. And just maybe, once we began to see this, we ourselves could learn to reveal God’s love to others around us.

Let there be light! — the single most powerful sentence you could ever say. ~~Rylie

Let your light shine for God – Today

January 4, Today’s thought – Compassion

Good Morning

Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people. Luke 7:12-16

The mourners didn’t cause him to stop.
Nor did the large crowd,
or even the body of the dead man on the stretcher.
It was the woman–
the look on here face and the redness in her eyes.
He knew immediately what was happening.
It was here son who was being carried out, her only son.
And if anyone knows the pain that comes from losing your only son,
God does.

So he did it;
he went into action.
“Don’t cry,” he told the mother.
“Arise,” he told the boy.

The dead man spoke, devil ran, and the people were reminded of this truth: For those who know the Author of Life, death is nothing more than Satan’s dead-man’s-bluff. Max Lucado

Jesus didn’t let the busyness of life, distract him for the focus of his mission – to seek and save that which was lost.

Trust God for your day. . .Today
With my prayers, desiring yours, Leslie

Bologna Sandwich Revisited

October, 2011, I wrote this post – not a week goes by but someone usually more than one someone re-reads it. I read again and chuckled and remembered……….so for those who missed it the first time. This one is for you.  Your Welcome.

The Saga of the Bologna Sandwich

It was time to make cornbread for family night.  Mary was making jambalaya and fried zucchini so cornbread seemed to be the proper compliment. What about Cajun cornbread instead of the tried and true version I’ve been making since I was 8 years old.

Where else to look for a recipe in these modern days but Google.  Cooks.com came up with several versions. I didn’t have all the ingredients for any of them. So while pondering do I fake it, do I run 🙂 to the store and buy stuff, or…….. when I saw listed  —  Bologna Sandwich.

I couldn’t help myself ……..click……….

Buy some ham or bologna (one pack) and some bread (one loaf) and buy a little jar of mustard. Then you make yourself a bologna sandwich. Put the bread down on the table, put the bologna on it. Spread the mustard on the bologna. Put another piece of bread on the bologna, then eat it with some milk. Then clean up.

and  5  PAGES  of comments. Talk about a walk down memory lane.

Bologna

with white bread

with mustard

with mayo

with lettuce, tomato, pickles

with Miracle whip

with peanut butter (I’ve never done that one)

Fried bologna

Babs – Am I the only person who’s fried bologna makes a big bump in the middle?

Fran  – yes it will make a bump in the middle! You take a knife and make a slice in the middle, then slice the outside rim (4-5 slashes around) for it not to curl!

Fried called a Flat Dog Sandwich

Grilled  with cheese

Ghetto steak and cheese:  from Bid Daddy  “OK here’s what you really do… butter 2 slices of bread and place the bologna and Sharp Cheddar in between them… now place the sandwich in the skillet buttered side down… basically your making a grilled cheese sandwich with a Lil flat hotdog in the middle… now enjoy what me and my kids call “ghetto steak and cheese sandwiches” camping favorite…. don’t forget the strawberry soda and the potato chips…..”

Isabella said, “OK here’s the deal. Cut all the crust off of two slices of white bread. The fresher the bread, the better. Then put a slice of bologna on one slice of bread, and mustard on the other slice of bread. Put them together like a sandwich and with your hand press down on the sandwich until the mustard squishes out and the bread is as thin as the bologna. It’s so good this way and your sandwich won’t fall apart. I guarantee.”

Robert added, “I am a food vender. I cook bologna on a smoker grill. I cook with wood, people love it. I put cheese on it with a little mayo and a tomato on it but I call this Kentucky round steak. They love this at the fair’s.”

Noelle replies  “Wow, who knew that a simple recipe would evoke such a passionate & nostalgic response? All the recipes sound great. My grandfather used to fry a piece of bologna in an iron skillet & place a square of American cheese on top while in the pan just so the cheese would melt ever so slightly. The square on the circle looked so neat to me as a child. He called it a flying saucer because the balogna would bump up in the center. You can bet that all of us grandkids were eager to eat something with such a cool name.”

Remember this:  from Hanna – When I was a kid, the greatest snack was a piece of bologna and eat two holes for your eyes then a hole for your mouth and its tons of fun! I’ll have to try frying my bologna – that sounds yummy!

International :  All Austinians know fried boloney is elephant ears, and all off the aforementioned recipes are just as good with spam if you add melted brown sugar & butter. Boloney & gym, here I come =:)  Hormel Baby

I would never have thought of this from Francis

“John, from Wisconsin, I have enjoyed reading all of these recipes, but loved your remark, before you clean up, make sure you offer your mother one, since I am a mother. I am for the deep fried bologna, dipped in milk, not water, followed by immersion in flour, then fried in bacon drippings, followed by deep fried tomato slices, loaded onto cheap rainbow or sunbeam bread, smeared liberally with mayonnaise. If you must have mustard, open the jar, set it in the middle of the table and stick a flower in it for ambiance.”
(Apparently she doesn’t like mustard.)

Thanks for the help:

Thanks I’m just learning how to cook. This one really helped, anyone have a recipe to peanut butter and Jelly? – Marcy

OMG …..my mom use to make a sandwich just like this one. I lost the recipe years ago,I never thought I’d EVER find it again. Bless you for posting it. My kids and I thank you 🙂  -Denise

Thanks so much!! This is my husband’s favorite meal and my mother in law would never give me the recipe (she even took the recipe card out of her box when we house sat). I’m going to run out to the store and make this for him tonight. I’ll show her!!  Debbie

Jennifer —  Back home in Minnesota, we didn’t eat much bologna. We ate SPAM. Fry the SPAM, golden brown on both sides, toast and butter your bread, then slather with Miracle Whip, add the fried SPAM, and you have yourself a serious Northern meal!

But that’s a different subject!

I had so much fun reading  and remembering——–Mom, “go to the store get 1/2 lb. bologna, 1/2 lb, chopped ham )you do know what chopped ham is, don’t you?), 1/2 lb. salami and a loaf of Wonder bread.”  It was time for lunch!

Here’s where to go to see this for your self.

http://www.cooks.com/rec/view/0,169,145181-224202,00.html

Thanks to Cooks.com for such a delightful time of smiles, snickers and wishes for bologna in the fridge.

Oh, I ran out of time looking at bologna that I had to make the plain jane  cornbread. 🙂

Yarn Along – More Hats

All I have knitted this past week is hats.
I have been making Wide Rib Beanies by Wooly Wormhead.
One recipient has asked for a longer hat,
so he could turn up the brim.
Not all the hats are given away yet.
I have a few more hats I want to make.

January 2 – Salt

Good Morning

My ponderings from Sunday Morning’s message.

The text – Leviticus 2:13
And every oblation of thy meat offering
shalt thou season with salt;
neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God
to be lacking from thy meat offering:
with all thine offerings thou shalt offer salt.

Meat Offering consisted of minchah;
minchah is explained . . . to be an offering of fine flour, with oil and frankincense.
It was in general a eucharistic or gratitude offering . . .Clarke’s Commentary

With every gratitude offering offer  SALT  —
worship, praise, submission/yielding to God’s will
and the sacrifice of my own will to His.

The salt of the covenant is the part that makes the covenant real,
valid and worthy to be adhered to and honored.

Dear Lord, May my offering to you today and each day of the coming new yearbe salty in your eyes. Amen.

As I felt my need of God’s help, I thought of this  song,

Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home

When my way grows drear
Precious Lord linger near
When my life is almost gone
Hear my cry, hear my call
Hold my hand lest I fall
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home

When the darkness appears
And the night draws near
And the day is past and gone
At the river I stand
Guide my feet, hold my hand
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home

Precious Lord, take my hand
Lead me on, let me stand
I’m tired, I’m weak, I’m lone
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home

Thomas Dorsey(1899–1993) wrote “Precious Lord” in response to his inconsolable bereavement at the death of his wife, Nettie Harper, in childbirth, and his infant son in August 1932 (Wikipedia)

Trust God for your saltiness . . . Today
With my prayers, desiring yours, Leslie

Next week I’ll be upgrading the allotted memory usage of my blog, then I’ll be able to add pictures again.

January 1, ‘the eyes of the Lord are upon it’

Good Morning

From Streams in the desert, vol 1, this is my very favorite New Year’s devotion. I receive such hope and comfort from knowing ‘thy God careth’ and ‘the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it’.

Deuteronomy 11:11-14  But the land, whither ye go to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinketh water of the rain of heaven:    A land which the LORD thy God careth for: the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.  And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto my commandments which I command you this day, to love the LORD your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul,   That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.

Today, dear friends, we stand upon the verge of the unknown. there lies before us the new year and we are going forth to possess it. Who can tell what we shall find? What new experiences, what changes shall come, what new needs shall arise? But here is the cheering, comforting, gladdening message from our Heavenly Father.
“The Lord thy God careth for it.”
“His eyes are upon it away to the ending of the year.”

All our supply is to come from the Lord. Here are springs that shall never dry; here are fountains and streams that shall never be cut off. Here, anxious one, is the gracious pledge of the Heavenly Father. If He be the Source of our mercies they can never fail us. No heat, no drought can parch that river, “the streams whereof make glad the city of God.”
The land is a land of hills and valleys. It is not all smooth nor all down hill. If life were all one dead level the dull sameness would oppress us; we want the hills and the valleys. The hills collect the rain for a hundred fruitful valleys. Ah, so it is with us! It is the hill difficulty that drives us to the throne of grace and brings down the shower of blessing; the hills, the bleak hills of life that we wonder at and perhaps grumble at, bring down the shower. How many have perished in the wilderness, buried under its golden sands, who would have lived and thriven in the hill-country; how many would have been killed by the frost, blighted wit winds, swept desolate of tree and fruit but for the hill–stern, hard, rugged, so steep to climb. God’s hills are a precious protection for His people against their foes!

We cannot tell what loss and sorrow and trial are doing. Trust only. The Father comes near to take our hand and lead us on our way today. It shall be a good, a blessed new year!

He leads us on by paths we did not know;
Upward He leads us, though our steps be slow,
Though oft we faint and falter on the way,
Though storms and darkness oft obscure the day;
Yet when the clouds are one,
We know He leads us on.

 He leads us on through all the unquiet years;
Past all our dreamland hopes, and doubts and fears,
He guides our steps, though all the tangled maze
of losses, sorrows, and o’eclouded days;
We know His will is done:
And still He leads us on. N. L. Zinzendorf.

Trust God for your day . . . Today
With my prayers, desiring yours, Leslie
