And Be Ye Thankful

Our Family

Our family has a tradition of sharing our ‘Thankfuls.’
Every month we get together for birthdays and anniversaries, food, fun, and just being together.
Before the presents and birthday cake,
everyone says three things for which they are thankful.
We call them ‘Thankfuls’
Our ‘thankfuls’ are not profound, rain, candles, a pillow, that it is bedtime, my garden is growing, after a long RV trip I was thankful for TP you couldn’t see through and wouldn’t melt in your hands (maybe TP is profound).
We try to stick to one rule, you can’t repeat what someone else has said.

from Simple Abundance ~~Sarah Ban Breathnach

. . .These are the six threads of abundant living which, when woven together, produce a tapestry of contentment that wraps us in inner peace, well-being, happiness, and a sense of security. Gratitude gives way to simplicity –the desire to clear out, pare down, and realize the essentials of what we need to live truly well. Simplicity brings with it order, both internally and externally. My Prayer Today

I’ve heard/read about people writing out their prayers.
“How interesting.” I would think.
I’ve listed prayer requests.
I’ve made gratitude lists.
Many times I have written down the Word of God.

A written prayer is a first for me.
It is not deep or poetic,
but heart felt.

Dear God,

For this day, I thank Thee,
for the goodmess that you have prepared for me
and for the rough places we must go through.

May I be thanful for all of my day.
Grant the grace and the oil of your Spirit
to smoooth and ease the rough places.’

May your banner of love over me be seen
your compassion, your kindness, your peace.

There will be many times
I’ll cry out to you this day –
please attend to my cry
There will be times I should be asking
for your help and yet,
I’ll be so caught up in the circumstances;
I’ll try to handle it all on my own.
Please, know I still need your help.

Your people are hurting, today
in their minds,
in their hearts,
in their bodies
please minister to these needs.
Comfort the grieving ones,
the tired, the weary, the struggling
and the ones who are still learning to walk by faith.
May we not forget that with you
‘ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE’.

For my family –
my husband, my mom, my children near,
my grandshildren, wherever they are.
Those on my list – close to my heart.
Help them to make right choices before you.
Help them to desire to put you first in their hearts.
Help that seed of faith, so small at times,
to never be extinquished.

For my daily duties today
I ask for strength and
to do them as for you
even though they are the same things
done over and over
May I take comfort in the sameness
in the constantness
in your continual supply.

Help me look at the many things you provide
with a thankful heart
for as I think will be the way that I am this day.

My meditation scripture today.

Philippians 4:8
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true,
whatsoever things are honest,
whatsoever things are just,
whatsoever things are pure,
whatsoever things are lovely,
whatsoever things are of good report;
if there be any virtue,
and if there be any praise,
think on these things.

In Jesus’name
Amen

She Saw God in All Things

summer, 2011 018Velma Elisabeth Crain
January 15, 1913 – September 17, 2014
Summer, 2011

On September 17, about 6:00 pm, my husband’s mother passed away.
She was 101 years old. Until just two weeks ago,
she would start her day reading the Bible.
Her favorite song – His Eye is on the Sparrow.
‘Seeing God in All Things’ are words she lived by every day of her life.
summer, 2011 075Summer, 2011, Grandma making dried flower arrangements
to sell at the annual Garden Club flower show, Redding CA.

1 Samuel 3:15
It is the Lord: let him do what seemeth him good.

“Give me a new idea,” I said,
While musing on a sleepless bed;
“A new idea that’ll bring to earth
A balm for souls of priceless worth;
That’ll give men thoughts of things above,
And teach them how to serve and love,
That’ll banish every selfish thought,
And rid men of the sins they’ve fought.”

The new thought came, just how, I’ll tell:
‘Twas when on bended knee I fell,
And sought from HIM who knows full well,
The way our sorrow to expel.
SEE GOD IN ALL THINGS, great and small,
And give HIM praise whate’er befall,
On life or death, in pain or woe,
See God, and overcome the foe.

I saw HIM in the morning light,
HE made the day shine clear and bright;
And gained from HIM refreshing shower,
AT eventide, when worn and sad,
HE gave me help, and made me glad.
AT midnight, when on tossing bed
My weary soul to sleep HE led.

I saw HIM when great losses came,
And found HE loved me just the same,
When heavy loads I had to bear,
I found HE lightened every care.
By sickness, sorrow, sore distress,
HE calmed my mind and gave me rest.
HE’S filled my heart with gladsome praise
Since  I gave HIM the upward gaze.

‘Twas new to me, yet old to some,
This thought that to me has become
A revelation of the way
We all should live throughout the day;
For as each day unfolds its light,
We’ll walk by faith and not by sight.
Life will, indeed, a blessing bring,
If we SEE GOD IN EVERYTHING.”

I love her and already miss her.

Today’s thought – Be Thankful

february 21 003February 21, 2012, the Farmer planted star jasmine on this metal lattice.

may9 010 May 9, 2014    Look how the jasmine as grown!

Good Morning

Colossians 3:15
And let the peace of God rule in your hearts,  to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

Which comes first-
the gift,
or the spirit of thanksgiving?
Common wisdom says that we get the gift first,
then we say thank you for receiving it.
While that is true,
some gifts will never be recognized
or received without a spirit of thanksgiving.

How many people sabotage the blessings in their life
because of a crummy attitude?
They are dissatisfied and disappointed–
and let the world know it–
despite a plethora of gifts from God
and others around them.

All of us can be thankful for the many things
God has done for us.
But there may be deeper levels of spirituality–
even more of His nature and goodness–
that we can experience through the attitude of gratitude.
Have you said thank you to God today?

Colossians 3:15
And let the peace (soul harmony which comes) from Christ rule (act as umpire continually) in your hearts [deciding and settling with finality all questions that arise in your minds, in that peaceful state] to which as [members of Christ’s] one body you were also called [to live]. And be thankful (appreciative), [giving praise to God always]  Amplified Bible

Be thankful . . . Today
With my prayers, desiring yours, Leslie

June 12, Today’s thought — It’s a Little Thing.

Being thankful for a cool glass of ice tea on a warm late spring day.
It’s such a little thing.

Good Morning

O magnify the LORD with me,
and let us exalt his name together.
Psalm 34:3

‘Only he who gives thanks for little things receives the big things.

We prevent God from giving us the great spiritual gifts He has in store for us, because we do not give thanks for daily gifts.

We think we dare not be satisfied with the small measure of spiritual knowledge, experience, and love that has been given to us, and that we must constantly be looking forward eagerly for the highest good. Then we deplore the fact that we lack the deep certainty, the strong faith, and the rich experience that God has given to others, and we consider this lament to be pious.

We pray for the big things and forget to give thanks for the ordinary, small (and yet really not small) gifts.

How can God entrust great things to one who will not thankfully receive from Him the little things?”

~Dietrich Bonhoeffer in Life Together: The Classic Exploration of Faith in Community

I will praise the name of God with a song,
and will magnify him with thanksgiving.
Psalm 69:30

The Reward of Trust

Yesterday Five Minute Friday’s writing prompt was trust. I wrote about my struggle with trusting. During my devotions the Lord had exposed a characteristic in my life. I had seen the tip of it before and called it being critical. I am ashamed to say what I saw as I looked at what the Lord saw.

Sometimes we pray, ‘help me to see myself as  You see me.’ Be careful, the picture is not always beautiful.

I had honestly prayed.

Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:  And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalms 139:23-24

I really wanted to know if there was any ‘wicked way in me’. Wicked is a very strong word. I didn’t think there was any wickedness in me. I was wrong. That is why I was so shocked. What I saw and what God saw were so different.

So while I was very thankful for God’s mercy to me to show me this wicked way; I was overcome with sorrow and grief. I prayed. My heart wept. I struggled.  I wrestled with the Lord. I didn’t want it in my life. What could I do to change? It seemed so huge a mountain. Through the day as this type of thought would come, and come they did, it was such a way of thinking I had accepted. I grieved anew. What can I do? How do I change?  Can I even change or am I undone completely?

Yesterday I wrote about my struggle with trust. I struggled and wrestled but I didn’t let go. I had to believe that if God showed me this cancer in my heart somehow He had the operation, the chemo therapy, the radiation to cure it. The procedure may leave scars. It may hurt. It may last for months. I may lose my hair. Despite all that  I would be cured.

I continued to pray and seek God’s face. He continued to hold my hand.

I asked for the procedure, for whatever it takes. He said, “The thoughts  will come, because you’ve allowed them entrance. As they come, I’ll point them out to  you and you can cast them away and replace it with kindness  You’ll replace them with respect for the person, acknowledgement of difference, acceptance of differences, you’ll be humble and appreciative.

This is my tool:

2Corinthians 10:5  Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Whenever I read this scripture, I think  ‘imaginations/high things’ those are thoughts that would separate or try to bring a wedge between me and God or His people. This was the way I would be able to conquer every thought.

With the tool came the encouragement in Proverbs 24:3-4 and 12-14

Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established: And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.
My son (daughter), eat thou honey, because it is good; and the honeycomb, which is sweet to thy taste:  So shall the knowledge of wisdom be unto thy soul: when thou hast found it, then there shall be a reward, and thy expectation shall not be cut off.

Wisdom, understanding, and knowledge only come from God. My wisdom, etc. was so much lower than God’s. I couldn’t see what He could.

I can trust Him. God has forgiven me. I am not that way any more. Those thoughts don’t come from my heart anymore. It is a habit way of thinking, from now on I will be working by God’s grace to develop a new habit.   He will be leading “me in the way everlasting.”

He will let me hold His Hand every thought by thought.

I had another desire for restoration. My thoughts were standing in the way. As I am obedient to what the Lord is showing me, ‘my expectation’ shall be fulfilled.

I am gratefully trusting God.

Because Gratitude is my Hobby Hourse

Gratitude  —  The quality of being thankful; readiness to show appreciation for and to return kindness.

During  November many friends have listed things for which they were thankful. The items varied from the most simple of an everyday blessing to the mind boggling power of our heavenly Father, yet the thankful heart acknowledged them all. That is the secret of gratitude: In everything give thanks.

The book, Simple Abundance: A Daybook of Comfort and Joy by Sarah Ban Breathnach started me on my journey of intentional gratitude. These quotes encouraged me to pursue gratitude and showed some of the benefits of being thankful.

“At the heart of Simple Abundance is an authentic awakening, one that resonates within your woul: you already possess all you need to be genuinely happy.”

“These are the six threads of abundant living which , when woven together produce a tapestry of contentment that wraps us in inner peace, well=being, happiness and a sense of security. First there is gratitude. When we do a mental and spiritual inventory of all that we have, we realize that we are very rich indeed. Gratitude gives way to simplicity–the desire to clear out, pare down, and realize the essentials of what we need to live truly well. Simplicity brings with it order, both internally and externally. A sense of order in our life brings us harmony. Harmony provides us with the inner peace we need to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us each day and beauty opens us to joy.”

Gratitude

Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. IT can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a hoe,a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow.  Melody Beattie

“. . .this first tool could change your life beyond belief: it’s what I call a daily gratitude journal. i have a beautiful blank book and each night before I go to bed, I write down five things that I can be grateful about the day. Some days my list will be filled with amazing things, most days just simple joys.

Other days–rough ones–i might think that I don’t have five things to be grateful for, so I’ll write down my basics, my health, my husband and daughter, their health my animals, my home, my friends, and the comfortable bed that I’m about to get into as well as the fact that the day’s over. That’s okay. Real life isn’t always going to be perfect or go our way, but the recurring acknowledgment of what is working in our lives can help us not only survive but surmount our difficulties. ”

Simplicity

“Once we take stock of our lives and let gratitude begin its transformative work, the next step on the path unfolds naturally. When we appreciate how much we have, we feel the urge to pare down, get back to basics, and learn what is essential for our happiness. We long to realize what is really important.

Many people believe simplicity implies doing without. On the contrary. True simplicity as a conscious life choice illuminates our lives from within. True simplicity is both buoyant and bountiful, able to liberate depressed spirits from the bondage and burden of extravagance and excess.”

Order

“There is an immediate emotional and psychological payoff to getting our houses in order.

” No woman can think clearly when constantly surrounded by clutter, chaos, and confusion, no matter who is responsible for it. Begin to think of order not as a strait-jacket of “shoulds” (make the bed, wash the dishes, take out the garbage) but as a shape–the foundation–for the beautiful life you are creating. It may be as simple as putting something back that you take out, hanging up something you take off, or teaching those who live with you to do the same for the common good of all. ”

Harmony

The notes I handle no better than many pianists. But the pauses between the notes, ah, that is hwere the art resides.  Artur Schnabel

“Harmony is the inner cadence of contentment we feel when the melody of life is in tune. When somehow we’re able to strike the right chord–to balance the expectations of our families and our responsibilities in the world on the one hand with our inner needs for spiritual growth and personal expression on the other. This is one of the most difficult challenges any woman faces because it requires that we make choices every day.”

Beauty

While the Simple Abundance path is gentle, its lessons are powerful. First of all, we learn to be grateful no matter what our circumstances may. In offering gratitude for our real lives, we discover how to change them for the better. As we embrace simplicity, we learn that less is truly more. This freedom encourages us to bring order to our affairs and cultivate harmony in our inner world. Going at our own pace, learning to recognize our limitations, appreciating our progress, we weave the lessons into the fabric of our daily moments until they become apart of us.

It is in the details of life that beauty is reveled, sustained and nurtured.”

Joy

With as eye made quiet by the power of harmony, and the deep power of joy , we see into the life of things.  William Wadsworth

The simple Abundant journey takes us to undiscovered territory. We learn each day how cultivating gratitude tills the soil of our soul and the how the seeds of simplicity and order send their roots down deep into the earth of our everyday existence. As we progress, harmony inspires us with quiet courage to create an authentic life for ourselves and those we love. With patience beauty blossoms and our hearts experience not only happiness, which often is fleeting, but a wellspring of joy that refreshes and renews.

Learning to live in the present moment is part of the path  of joy.”

Accepting Real Life

(This thought was huge in the way I began to consider my life.)

“Accepting and blessing our circumstances is a powerful tool for transformation. In fact, this potent combination is a spiritual elixir that can work miracles in our lives.

What is acceptance? Acceptance is surrendering to what is; our circumstances, our feelings, our problems, our financial status, our work, our health, our relationships with other people, the delay of our dreams. Before we can change anything in our life we have recognize that this is the way it’s meant to be right now. For me, acceptance has become what I call the long sigh of the soul. It’s the closed eyes in prayer, perhaps even the quiet tears. It’s “all right” as in “All right, You lead, I’ll follow.” and it’s “all right” as in “Everything is going to turn out all right.” This is simply part of the journey.

Over the years I have discovered that much of my struggle to be content despite out side circumstances has arisen when I stubbornly resisted what was actually happening in my life at the present moment. But I have learned that when I surrender to the reality of a particular situation–when i don’t continue to resist, but accept– a softening in my soul occurs. Suddenly I am able to open up to receive all the goodness and abundance available to be because acceptance brings with it so much relief and release.”  (It’s called GRACE.  me)

“Whatever situation exists in your life right now, accept it. Cast a glance around and acknowledge what is going on. This is my tiny kitchen with the dirty floor, this is how much I weigh, this is my checking account balance, this is where I am  right now. This is that is really happening in my life at the present moment. this is okay. This is real life.”

Our task is to say a holy yes to the real things of our life as they exist.  Natalie Goldberg

“After accepting our present circumstances, no matter what they are, we must learn to bless them.

Through your gritted teeth if necessary.

. . . blessing whatever vexes us is the spiritual surrender that can change even troublesome situations for the better. Blessing the circumstances in our lives also teaches us to trust. ”

(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Matthew 6:32-33  (my addition)

Embracing Joyful Simplicities

Year by year the complexities of this spinning world grow more bewildering and so each year we need all the more to seek peace and comfort in the joyful simplicities. —Woman’s Home Companion, December 1935

” To keep our daily round from being all drudgery, we’ve got to savor the art of the small: discovering diminutive delights that bring us peace and pleasure.”

This is a daybook, meaning there is a reading for each day. I haven’t read through the whole book. I go to parts of it now and then; my book is very underlined and written in, thoughts and scriptures, question marks and exclamation points. As with everything, I take what I can use and let the rest be. There are other exercises in the book that I had fun with these caused me to think about who I am and what I like, what I wanted in life. I have enjoyed the journey thus far. If you get the book, I’d suggest reading the section at the end of each month; these lists give ideas of how to incorporate the book’s ideas into the month.

I think I’ll start reading it again this year, so expect snippets in ‘what’s on my mind.’

This book is still on the book store shelves. I haven’t looked for it in used book stores, but it is probably there too.

Veterans, Thanks for the Liberty!

I took this picture from a cruise ship leaving New York harbor in 2009.
