Three on Thursday – Evidence of Fall

or Friday if you’ve procrastinated like I did, again.

Fall is my favorite season.
Cool days and cooler nights,
a relief after Sacramento summer days.
I found three evidences that it will soon be fall.

This vine, so dainty and fine, changes into its fall colors gently.
I don’t know its name.

Zucchini, cucumbers and marigolds have had it,
after working so hard all summer long!

Sunflowers, a summertime favorite. with her happy faces.
In the fall become food for the birds.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2
To every thing there is a season,
and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born,
and a time to die;
a time to plant,
and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

December 11, Today’s thought – Faithful who promised

dec 9 frost, end of garden 004Garden time is over in this plot.
Stakes pulled up,
drip system rolled up,
plants tilled in
as ground rests and nourishes itself
in preparation for another year.

Good Morning

Hebrews 10:22-24
22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: KJV

A Brother gave his testimony of how God saved him and had been with him for many years.
He said his favorite scripture was:
(for he is faithful that promised;)
What a foundation block to build our lives upon!

22 Let us all come forward and draw near with true (honest and sincere) hearts in unqualified assurance and absolute conviction engendered by faith (by that leaning of the entire human personality on God in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness), having our hearts sprinkled and purified from a guilty (evil) conscience and our bodies cleansed with pure water.

23  So let us seize and hold fast and retain without wavering the hope we cherish and confess and our acknowledgement of it, for He Who promised is reliable (sure) and faithful to His word.

24  And let us consider and give attentive, continuous care to watching over one another, studying how we may stir up (stimulate and incite) to love and helpful deeds and noble activities, Amplified Bible

Build on God’s promises . . .Today

August 23, Today’s thought — But THROUGH

Melons are picked.

Good Morning

When thou passest through
Isaiah 43:2

“When thou passest through the waters”
Deep the waves may be and cold,
But Jehovah is our refuge,
And His promise is our hold;
For the Lord Himself hath said it,
He, the faithful God and true:
“When thou comest to the waters
Thou shalt not go down, BUT THROUGH,”

Seas of sorrow, seas of trial,
bitterest anguish, fiercest pain,
rolling surges of temptation
Sweeping over heart and brain–,
They shall never overflow us
for we know His word is true;
all His waves and all His billows
He will lead us safely through.

Threatening breakers of destruction,
Doubt’s insidious undertow,
Shall not sink us, shall not drag us
Out to ocean depths of woe;
For His promise shall sustain us,
Praise the Lord, whose Word is true!
\We shall not go down, or under,
For He saith, “Thou passest THROUGH.”

Trust God for your day. . .Today
With my prayers, desiring yours, Leslie

Open Letter to the New Owner

One day I drove by this house, and everything I saw caught my attention. The house was empty. If a house is empty, I take advantage of the freedom to snoop. I looked in every window I could. What I saw was the fulfillment of a dream I didn’t know I had. I didn’t know I loved hardwood floors, river rock fireplaces with bookend bookshelves, sky lights and windows, Oh, I loved the windows. I loved the craftsman style and colors.

Later when I told the Farmer (who was then the Welder) about the House, I said, “It is everything we would want, but I know we can’t afford it. Please just come and look at it.” So we did. As we walked through the house marveling over the features we loved, we knew we could do this or this for the Lord here.
The Welder said, “Let’s try to buy it.” Fifteen days after we looked at the house on Lincoln Avenue we were signing papers to purchase the home.

I always wanted daffodils. Now I had daffodils.

As you walk through this door, I want to tell you a little about it. This House is a treasure box  filled with love and laughter, children and grandchildren, health and healing, sickness and sadness, singing and praying.

This House has been a house of parties, guests numbering from just a few to over 100. Emily’s never to be forgotten 12th birthday party held less than a month after we moved in.  Alex’s first birthday party was held on the newly finished 1ooo square foot deck. His grandparents and uncle from Hawaii came to celebrate with us. I can’t number the times after church,  “Come,  Bring your own snacks.” My father’s 70th birthday party as  he was entering into Alzheimer’s grip. Monthly family night get-to-gathers  full of good food, laughter, singing, games, birthdays, children, anniversaries, stories, thankfuls, and prayer.   The Crain Thanksgiving, 3 day event, often with 40-60 relatives and friends sharing much love and laughter. Ladies with their handwork and Gentlemen with their laptops.  Young People’s Class parties in October initiating the new members.  We even hosted a wedding!

This House was always seen in our eyes as belonging to God. We were the overseers. The House has been a refuge for family and friends who needed a home, or a time of care, or a place to stay between now and later. Some stayed for a few days, some for months. The House just seemed to expand and adapt and accept all that came through the door.

The door that was always open and the house always welcoming.

You would have had to see the gardens to believe them.

You would have had to taste the veggies to appreciate the freshness.

You had to be here to see how grandchildren and their fathers played. Our chicken pen

In 2010, we lost our business, we lost our home, but we did not lose our memories.  We did not lose our faith. We have not been forsaken or left alone. Our God didn’t need this house anymore, so it was time for us to move on. This was God’s plan. We haven’t understood all that has happened or why. We have trusted anyway, even in the shadows and darkness of sorrow and grief.

So today, I wiped down counters, picked up remnants of livingand put into the trash the leftovers of sorting. I vacuumed and mopped the hardwood one last time. (Use Pledge for hard wood floors, it gives the floor a beautiful satin glow) I remembered so many good times, hard times, and precious times of loving family and serving God.

Today I said good bye and walked out the door, and thanked God with my whole heart for the privilege of living and loving in the house He provided for us all to enjoy.

Dear new owner, if you will pause and listen carefully, you’ll hear whispers of love, children’s giggles, running feet, crackling fires, music loud, sometimes raised voices, questions, sighs, sobs…because real people have lived in this house.

I only ask: bring love and joy to this house, and this house will love you so much.

Pictures for Brother Bob

Bro Bob lives here.

Now he is visiting family in Athol, Idaho. These pictures are to show him what is happening here while he is away.

I’ve taken over the game table to try to finish this log cabin quilt.

The Cats still come to eat morning and night. Marmalade is getting more and more friendly, actually coming for a pet and scratch around the ears.

GCrain’s Watering System and the Gardener

Join me as we tour a special place.

Located on Candy Cane Lane in Redding, CA

down a partially paved private road to this driveway

enter here and you will find a garden.

The soil  is very porous and rocky. Water puddles very little. The ground looks dry on the third day after watering. So this garden gets watered every other day. The watering system is a combination of plastic pipe, hoses, timers, sprinklers on the top of 5 foot poles, oscillating sprinklers, and a bubblier. Sprinklers attached to hoses are positioned on plastic grates:

1. stability   and  2. to remember where to put the sprinkler next.

The picture gallery is of the different spots in the garden,  I’ll include flowers as we walk around the yard.

One day this rose bush is covered with blooms, that night the deer have dessert!

Trumpet creeper uses this tree as a trellis.

If you don’t find GCrain here in the potting shed,

you might find her here making a flower arrangement,

but always look first right here.

After breakfast,  her first stop of the day is with the Word of  God.

If you ever have an ‘every other day’ free and would like to see this garden freshly watered.  GCrain and Aunt S would be glad to have you come and visit with them and water for them.

In the Grandma Crain’s Garden

In Redding, that arid looking place,  is a garden that gets watered every other day rain or shine! Or that’s the way it seems.  There are 28 stations to be watered marked by plastic crates or permanent sprinklers. Some of these stations have  “old man” timers as Dan would call them, others are changed because the timed ones ran out of time.

But you know, there is a peace in the garden. There is something special to walk in a fresh watered garden, something special about walking through the garden and have hummingbirds flying around, dragonflies and butterflies flitting from flower to flower, and something special about seeing the small changes from day to day. Perhaps one of the reasons God meet with his people in the cool of the evening in the garden.

I need to take pictures of the watering system and Ill add them to this post, next time I have internet access. 🙂

Five Minute Friday — Rest

We write for five minutes flat on Fridays.

We write bold and beautiful and free. Unscripted and unedited. We just write without worrying if it’s just write or not.

Today’s prompt  —  Rest

Where is the rest?

You know, the part that is left

that part that somehow always seems missing

the illusive part

the shy part

the part where you must be quiet before it will come

busyness, loud noises, strife, contention, sharp words scare it away

but if you find a place that is still, even if it is only inside you

and you wait

and you listen

you will find rest for your soul.

Job 34:29  When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble?. . .

A portion of  Grandma Crain’s garden.

This wasn’t what I was thinking of when I started, but how many times when I just open up, my Father is there to again bring rest and assurance that He has all things under control.

Summer Soup or Zucchini Bruschetta

Disclaimer: this is not a fancy how-to make it food post. I’ll list the stuff, you figure out how to put it together.

This recipe is light, quick  and easy for the summer time.

Zucchini Bruschetta was the original recipe.

1/2 cup chopped zucchini; 1 Tbsp olive oil; 2 Tbsp fresh basil; 1 clove garlic; 1 cup diced tomatoes; 1 round sandwich skinny bread thingy (if not counting calories whatever bread you like; salt, pepper to taste; a sprinkle of Parmesan and a few fingers full of Mozzarella cheese.

Saute first 4 ingredients until tender crisp, add tomatoes, heat a little (don’t let the tomatoes get mushy). Spread on toasted bread, top with cheeses and broil until cheese melts.   This makes enough for maybe two of those sandwich skinny bread things.

So I started with Zucchini Bruschetta as a basis for soup.

Summer Soup  —  To make soup, I started with the zucchini and added chopped onion, cubed eggplant, and big juicy tomatoes. Letting it cook a little longer brings out the tomato juice and no other liquid is needed.  I use salt, pepper, dried basil, a garlic salt blend and Italian seasoning.

I’ve thought about adding bacon, celery, mushrooms, rice or pasta.  I guess this is just a basic soup, and what gets found in the refrig makes it way to the pot.

It is okay to make this soup in the winter.

We have the Neatest Chickens

We don’t live on a homestead or even a ranch or farm, we are assistant caretakers of our church property. We live in the southwest corner in a trailer. We have some chickens and a garden.  We average 15-18 eggs a day. We sell eggs and produce from the garden. We love our chickens!

I don’t know this variety. He walks like a clown, I was going to call him Duke, but Uncle B started calling him, Bobo, and it has stuck.

Bobo and his Lady.

I think they are beautiful.

This picture shows the green cucumbers on fencing, the cantaloupe, musk melons, watermelons, zucchini, yellow crooked necked squash and scallop squash rows.  The Farmer plants a few zinnias and sunflowers  for me.

We enjoy our life on Cozy Acres

What Happens at Family Night gets posted!

Family night was a fun place to be! Everyone but two were able to come, Aunty A and Cousin C were very much missed.

The boy cousins 12 and under arrived in the afternoon with pool time with Uncle A and Uncle D.  Most got some SPR (swimming pool rash); ALL had a great time.

I see some SPR on this Guy…but he doesn’t see us!

Our menu included Grandpa T”s tri tip shish kabob with zucchini (from the Farmer’s garden, mushrooms, and onions, rice  a roni, rolls, salad with cucumbers and cherry and yellow pear tomatoes (from the Farmer’s garden, and three kindsa  pickles.  Chocolate cake, cinnabon cupcakes, mint chocolate chip, strawberry, and bo’nilla ice cream. YUM!

Aunty M and  Aunty E use their time to advantage.

Some serious thinking occurred.

And a little educational reading happened.

SEVEN birthdays ( we had missed June) and ONE anniversary were celebrated.

A rousing sing a long kept us laughing.

Uncle A read us the story of David and Goliath, several thought provoking comments were added by the listeners.  Pray was made for dear ones far away but close in our hearts, and for near ones with special needs, and for all Little I’s friends.

Ten people were able to be thankful, I wish I had written them down. The variety of blessings are beyond number, and always worth the telling.

The Old folks left (Uncle b and the Farmer), the younger battled it out on the Wii

A serious player

and a somewhat lopsided game of 5 Crowns was played in the dining room.

Some of the crew!

Thank you Uncle A and Aunty A for extending again your warm welcome to your home for our family’s night together.

(PS. The quilt in the back ground of some of the pictures was paper pieced and quilted by Aunty E.)

The Farmer

The Farmer’s love is growing a beautiful, weed free garden.

His father was a vegetable truck gardener in the central valley, CA from the time the Farmer was about 4-5 years old. The Farmer began planting beans and corn at that young age. As he grew older, he worked in the garden before and after school. He and his Brother dug burr clover and johnson grass from the flower garden as a way to work off excess energy for Mama.

When we bought our first property, an acre, He began gardening on his own. Over the years, we moved sometimes we had a garden sometimes not. When we bought a nice home on 1/2 acre in Carmichael 13 years ago, the Farmer began gardening again in earnest. I told him the garden was fine, but too many times the weeds took over, I really didn’t want a garden all weedy, since the garden would be the main view from our deck.

The Farmer developed his drip system of watering and mulching between the rows.  We had three huge sycamore trees that dropped millions of leaves each year and these were shredded used as mulch and tilled back into the soil each fall. His garden had no weeds!

From his consistent labor a garden grew that was the envy all who visited.  2010 was the last year he had a garden at this property.  This is last year’s garden:

Then we were able to move our RV trailer on the Church’s property to help as caretakers, October, 2011.

and the seeds of garden came with us.

There is a peace about gardening, not too many people will fuss with the Farmer about when he plants and what he plants. Not too many people offer to weed or lay watering lines or pound posts to stake tomatoes and cucumbers.

The Farmer doesn’t really want or need the advice or help, it is his creation.  He plants. He waters. He hoes. He ties and stakes. He weaves the cucumber tenderals into the field fencing.  God gives the increase and blessing.

Both God and the Farmer stand back smiling looking at their handiwork and say, “It is very good.”

The Simple Woman’s Daybook – June 17

TODAY is  June 17, 2011

Outside my window…Bright sunshiny clear blue skies and a garden loving this hot weather, I can almost see growth from one day to the next.

I am thinking…how much writing down specific thoughts helps center me.

I am very thankful for… family and friends, especially when news is received of hard health battle beginning.

From my learning rooms… God is reviewing with me His promises of never failing grace.

From the kitchen…my kitchen has kinda been on strike, just making do with leftovers the past couple days, do today on goes the chef’s hat.  A bucket of fresh picked yellow crooked-necked squash is on the counter ready to be added to the menu.

I am wearing…black tee and cream skirt, barefoot until time to head out shopping.

I am creating…the quilt from last entry is stalled, I need to do (by tomorrow) a small wall hanging for “Bread and Butter” quilt group using pattern and fabric by Kaye England, a favorite quilter and designer.

I am going…to the grocery store, to Rite Aid, and then to make the rest of today

I am reading…the sequel to A Friday Night Knitting Club, Knit Two by Kate Jacobs. I enjoyed the first book this is the second of three in the series.

I am hoping…the weather isn’t too hot today.

I am hearing…birdsong, because the lawn mower was just turned off as Uncle Bob sweeps the sidewalk.

Around the house…not too bad, a little cluttered, and laundry to be done (soap to be gotten when shopping.)

One of my favorite things…eating breakfast out by myself, taking my time with a good book.

A few plans for the rest of the week: quilt club-Saturday, church services and family for lunch (all 20 of us I think)-Sunday; next week the car needs to be serviced, daycare with little Miss A, kinda of normal stuff, I like normal unexciting.

Here is picture I am sharing…

This morning’s picking, yellow crooked-necked squash, thanks to the Giver of increase and the Farmer.

Scripture:   I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. 1Corinthians 3:6

Join Simple Woman’s Daybook and  me to pause and reflect on Tuesdays or whenever I can get to writing my thoughts.
