10 Things You Would Bring on a Picnic.

Picnic – that reminds me of a picnic I took all by myself. It was one of the most enjoyable picnics I’ve ever had.

I drove to a small foothill town, Placerville, CA and visited a Quilt Shop (1).

I asked where I could find a quiet place (2) to eat my lunch, a local winery.

I found a table in the shade with gentle breezes  by a small stream(3).

Out of my pretty insulated bag(4) I took:

A pretty plate and glass (5)

A coordinated cloth napkin (6)

A fork and a steak knife (7)

My favorite foods (8) – leftover chicken fried steak, cottage cheese and  pineapple, tomatoes – I just can’t remember what I took for dessert, but I’m sure I brought something sweet, and diet Pepsi/ice.

The current book I was reading (9).

And a commodity most precious  – enough unhurried time (10).

I’m sure you would have enjoyed it – at another table.  🙂

Ten on Tuesday – What’s going on in May?

ToT-Button

She chooses a topic – we list ten items.

10 Things You’re Looking Forward to in May.

1. the Farmer’s birthday is May 1. 72 years ago the Farmer’s father wanted take Mama to the mountains for their anniversary. Mama said “She’s rather go to the hospital.” She got her way that year.

2. May 3, I’m joining Erica at Fiddle Knits in a MKAL(Mystery Knit-a-long), Minerva. I am trying to find 1200 yards of variegated fingering (sock) weight yarn that shouts, Hey I want to be a shawl! I’ve checked the stash shed, not enough yardage in one color yarn.

By May 3rd, I plan on
2. Finish knitting Miss Shirley’s shawl
3. Finish knitting Gratitude Seashore
4. Finish sewing the binding on Miss Deanna’s quilt

5. The second or third Friday night in May, We begin hosting “Barbeque, Volleyball, and Fellowship at Cozy Acres.”
This pot luck/fun and games get together continues through the summer until some time in September. It is held on the church grounds, church members, family and friends are all invited.

6. The third Saturday of the month is “Family Night at the Crain’s” the Farmer and I, our five children, their spouses and children, and guests gather for food, laughter, birthday and anniversary celebrations, games, dessert. This month we meet at our youngest son’s home, menu is yet to be decided.

7. I’ll be going to Redding to help with the Farmer’s mother, she had her 100th birthday in January, while the Farmer’s sister and brother-in-law take a vacation to see family in Southern Ca.
DSC_0121 elmer & mom2013
8.  Since I’ll be in Redding for most of Mother’s day, Our family’s get-together will be the Sunday evening before Mother’s Day.

9.  I am going to volunteer to drive a group of young people to Phoenix, AZ to a Young People’s Retreat over Memorial Day weekend.

10. I’m also having breakfast with daughter-in-law one morning and breakfast/lunch? with Miss Shirley, dates to be decided. I’ll babysit two days a week for 3 little girls at their home.

I didn’t realize how busy May was going to be.
I first thought I’d have trouble finding 10 things to list.
Looks like May is going to be a good month.

10 Favorite Sweater Patterns

I’ve never knitted a sweater for myself, only children.
Those are the patterns that catch my eye.

My top two favorites are EZ’s Surprise Jacket and
the Wonderful Wallaby by Carol A. Anderson.
I have made several of each of these.
I usually have one or the other on my needles.

july 13 005

This sweet daycare miss is wearing a surprise jacket in worsted weight yarn.

For the grandsons knitted Lion’s Homespun pattern
for a ‘hooded knitted sweater’.
I liked the fit, but not sewing the pieces together.

I’m knitting “Cowgirl, Butterfly, Astronaut’
by Fawn Pea, a vest with butterfly sleeves for a great-niece
Feb6 yarn along 010I’ve finished the ‘skirt’ and started the bodice, love the colors.

Checking my Ravelry library, I found:
Bella and Beau  by Megan Grewal,  like the yoke stripes and garter stitches
Sunday sweater  by Ginny Sheller, love the texture
Perdita  by Tonia Barry, like the stripes and the sideways construction
Of course, Phoebe’s sweater  by Joanna Johnson, is darling

If I were to knit a sweater from me,
I think I’d try the easy fit style of either
Pea Shoot pullover by  Cathy Carron or
Radiate by Helene Rush.

All links are Ravelry.

Ten on Tuesday – Pranks and Jokes

ToT-Button

On Tuesday’s Carole hosts ‘Ten on Tuesdays’.
She chooses a topic – we list ten items.

10 Favorite April Fool’s Day Pranks.
If you’re not into pranks then 10 Favorite Jokes

I chose  only three items this week:

My favorite joke of all time,

A man was walking along a California beach and stumbled across an old lamp. He picked it up and rubbed it and out popped a genie. The genie said, “OK. You released me from the lamp, blah blah blah. This is the fourth time this month and I’m getting a little sick of these wishes so you can forget about three. You only get one wish!” The man sat and thought about it for a while and said, “I’ve always wanted to go to Hawaii but I’m scared to fly and I get very seasick. Could you build me a bridge to Hawaii so I can drive over there to visit?”

kailua-beach-01-01
The genie laughed and said, “That’s impossible. Think of the logistics of that! How would the supports ever reach the bottom of the Pacific? Think of how much concrete…how much steel!! No, think of another
wish.” The man said OK and tried to think of a really good wish. Finally, he said, “I’ve been married and divorced four times. My wives always said that I don’t care and that I’m insensitive. So, I wish that I could understand women….know how they feel inside and what they’re thinking when they give me the silent treatment….know why they’re crying, know what they really want when they say ‘nothing’….know how to make them truly happy….”
The genie asked, “Do you want that bridge two lanes or four?”

My favorite blond joke,

A blond woman walks into a store.
Curious about a shiny object, she asks, “What is that?”
The store clerk responds, “It’s a thermos.”
The blond then asks, “What does it do?”
The clerk says “It keeps hot things hot and cold things cold.”
So she buys one.
The next day, she brings it to work with her.
Her boss, also a blond, asks, “What is that shiny object?”
She replies “It’s a thermos.”

il_fullxfull.367752107_6ndw
He asks, “What does it do?”
She says, “It keeps hot things hot and cold things cold.”
He then asks, “What do you have in there?”
“Two cups of coffee and a popsicle.”

A divorce prank that makes me laugh every time I read it.

Her very wealthy husband wanted a divorce. He loved his young secretary. The young secretary wanted the big house. The husband’s attorney made that happen . . .

She spent the first day packing her personal belongings into boxes, crates and suitcases. On the second day, she had the movers come and collect her things. On the third day, she sat down for the last time at their beautiful dining room table by candlelight, put on some soft background music and feasted on a pound of shrimp, a jar of caviar, and a bottle of Chardonnay.

ID-10097039
When she had finished, she went into each and every room and deposited a few half-eaten shrimp shells dipped in caviar into the hollow of the curtain rods. She then cleaned up the kitchen and left.

When the husband returned with his new girlfriend, all was bliss for the first few days. Then slowly, the house began to smell. They tried everything; cleaning and mopping and airing the place out. Vents were checked for dead rodents and carpets were steam cleaned. Air fresheners were hung everywhere. Exterminators were brought in to set off gas canisters, during which they had to move out for a few days. In the end they even paid to replace the expensive wool carpeting.

Nothing worked.

People stopped coming over to visit. Repairmen refused to work in the house. The maid quit.

Finally, they could not take the stench any longer and decided to move. A month later, even though they had cut their price in half, they could not find a buyer for their stinky house. Word got out and, eventually, even the local realtors refused to return their calls.

Finally, they had to borrow a huge sum of money from the bank to purchase a new place. The ex-wife called the man and asked how things were going. She told him she missed her old home terribly and would be willing to reduce her divorce settlement in exchange for getting the house back. Knowing his ex-wife had no idea how bad the smell was, he agreed on a price that was about 1/10th of what the house had been worth, but only if she were to sign the papers that very day. She agreed and within the hour, his lawyers delivered the paperwork.

A week later, the man and his new girlfriend stood smirking as they watched the moving company pack everything to take to their new home. Including the curtain rods.

I LOVE A HAPPY ENDING, DON’T YOU?

Ten on Tuesdays – Dreamin’

ToT-Button

On Tuesday’s Carole hosts ‘Ten on Tuesdays’.
She chooses a topic – we list ten items.

10 Things You’d Do If You Won the Big Powerball Jackpot.

What a fun topic!
Not many of us could say
we haven’t dreamed of winning the big one.
Although not long ago I ask the Farmer
“what would you want to but if. . . ”
After a long pause he replied,
“Maybe a new tractor…”
I’m not that limited.

1. A substantial offering toward missionary work our church supports in Mexico, Cuba and different areas in Africa.

2. A chunk to each of the 5 children for paying off/buying the house and furnishing of their dreams. Or maybe we will seriously consider that family compound we’ve talked about.

2009 1226 (91)aAaron, Dan, Mary, Emily and Margaret

3. Trust funds for the 13 grandchildren to access at 30 years old.

2009 1226 (86)(opps! most current– 2 not present)

4. Funds for our mothers: the Farmer’s is 100yrs old in a nursing home; my mother is independent and healthy, but __?___ a month would go a long way toward easing financial needs.

5. A new tractor

6. A whole family vacation, that we’ll remember and talk and laugh about the rest of our lives.

7. Travel – – we have several trips we’ve been dreaming about

8. Remodel the caretaker’s house – possibly will be our home in the future

9. Increase our monthly income by $2000. a month (we are retired with SS plus occasional part-time income).

10. A Hyundai Genesis for me.

“Be grateful for the home you have, knowing that at this moment,
all you have is all you need”. I believe this with all my heart.

Ten on Tuesday – Random Thoughts

Ten on Tuesday – Random Thoughts on your Mind

This should be easy.
I think I am the queen of random.
My brain seems to flit form topic to topic
like a bumblebee,
without the honey to show for all the work.

1.  I am thankful the Farmer fixed my roller ball mouse with his trusty soldering gun and pointy pliers and things.
Mar 18 roller ball

2.  Making plans to go to Oregon on Friday for sister-in-law’s 80th birthday party on Saturday:
when to leave…stop and visit mother-in-law in Redding, CA…
snacks to take…what to pack …is everything clean…
can I fit in a stop at the yarn shop in Ashland. OR . . .
what knitting to take mustn’t run out yarn
(yes, must stop at that yarn shop)…
check and see if there is a yarn shop in Medford, OR?

3.  Oh, yes, the laundry!

4.  Feeling guilty because a quilt is waiting patiently on the ironing board for two borders to sewn on; so it can go to the quilter, my lovely daughter Quilt’m Sunflower Designs, and then to the enormously patient friend in Washington. How I wish I could deliver it in person!

may26 019
(last spring when just started – I just like this happy picture)

5.  What to make for dinner?

6.  It’s time to sweep the floor.

7.  Add paper towels to the shopping list, and a card for above birthday.

8.  Grizz just jumped through the cat door for a visit/nap on top of the ironing board.
Feb 14 13 grizz 001

9.  Just two more to go then I can knit, after I start the laundry.

10.   Click on Carole Knits to see other ‘random thought‘ lists.

P.s. I wrote this on Monday – laundry is done,  I didn’t sweep.
